Astros release Singleton two days before opener

Veteran first baseman Jon Singleton, 33, who had hit .171 with a .239 on-base percentage, no homers and two RBIs in 17 spring training games, was released Tuesday by the Houston Astros, who open the season on Thursday against the New York Mets.
