Logan Evans tossed five strong innings in his MLB debut against Miami and the Mariners moved into sole possession of first place in the AL West with a 7-6 win.

Jonny Farmelo, a 20-year-old outfielder and one of the Mariners’ top prospects, is scheduled to make his season debut Tuesday for the High-A Everett AquaSox.

Julio Rodriguez hammered the first pitch thrown in the bottom of the first inning and Jorge Polanco went back-to-back two pitches later as the Mariners rolled to a 14-0 win.

Mariners opening-day starter Logan Gilbert is being shut down from throwing for at least two weeks after being diagnosed with a grade 1 strain of the flexor in his right elbow.

Logan Gilbert exited the game after three innings with an arm injury and the Mariners went on to lose 8-4 to the Marlins in their series opener Friday night.
