<title>[Bleacher Nation] - Chicago Cubs Lineup: Happ Moves Down to 8th, Taylor Starts</title>
<description>CUBS LINEUP — This Cubs team, man. It’s been an eventful summer. I’ll say that much! Let’s see if we can pull off the sweep today at Wrigley Field, perhaps sometime BEFORE the bottom of the ninth inning. Chicago Cubs Lineup: Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, RF Alex Bregman, 3B Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, SS Pedro Ramirez, 2B Carson Kelly, C Ian Happ, LF Tyrone Taylor, CF For the second straight day, the White Sox are opening the game with a left-handed reliver (this time, Sean Newcomb) followed by a right-handed bulk guy (likely Jose Urquidy). So, for the second straight day, the Cubs lineup is a little different than usual. Like yesterday’s group, both Nico Hoerner and Pedro Ramirez are up higher. And with Carson Kelly starting instead of Miguel Amaya, Ian Happ moves down even further to eighth. But this time, instead of Michael Conforto at the bottom, it’s Tyrone Taylor, which is just a little strange because he’s unlikely to get an at-bat against the lefty, unless (1) the Cubs bat around in the first or (2) the White Sox let Newcomb go a second inning (which is actually plenty plausible). I do wonder, however, if Conforto will sub in early for Taylor if neither comes true. Or if Counsell will just let him play until there’s a big spot/needed-PH. Chicago White Sox Lineup: Sam Antonacci, LF Munetaka Murakami, 1B Miguel Vargas, 3B Andrew Benintendi, DH Braden Montgomery, RF Colson Montgomery, SS Chase Meidroth, 2B Tristan Peters, CF Jake Rogers, C Pitching Matchup: Chicago Cubs: Clay Holmes’ first start as a Cub came with a whole lot of rust and a lot of questions from the nonbelievers. But his second start was a bona fide gem, featuring 6.2 scoreless innings of one-hit, one-walk ball against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. And the best part is that his elite 61.1% groundball rate in that outing was actually LOWER than the absurd 78.6% groundball rate he posted in his first start. The only bummer is that with Dansby Swanson now on the IL and Nico Hoerner moving over from second, that stout Cubs infield defense that was meant to gobble up all of those groundballs is weaker today than it was a week ago. Pedro Ramirez is hardly a slouch, but he’s not Nico at second and Nico is not Dansby at short. Just the facts. No one in the Sox lineup has more than 6 ABs lifetime against Clay Holmes, so not much of a matchup history to go over. Chicago White Sox: + For the second day in a row, the White Sox will roll with an opener plus a bulk guy. It worked well enough for them yesterday in the bulk portion, as Erick Fedde tossed 4.2 frustratingly scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts. Today, they’ll kick the game off with the talented Sean Newcomb, who has a 2.51 ERA this season. Newcomb is capable of going more than one inning, by the way, so let’s hope the Cubs can actually make him throw some extra pitches in the first (at the very least). Getting him out (and getting to Urquidy) as soon as possible should be the goal. For what it’s worth, Newcomb is split neutral for his career and actually tougher on righties than lefties. As for Urquidy, he’s … not as good. In six appearances (10.0 IP) at the big-league level this season, Urquidy has an 8.10 ERA. Of course, that’s a pretty small sample, as most of his time has been spent in Triple-A. At that level, Urquidy has made 20 starts this season with a very solid 3.48 ERA. Like in the big leagues, Urquidy’s minor league strikeout rate is below average, but his walk rate is well under control. On paper, the Cubs should have a huge pitching advantage this afternoon. But that’s what I would have said yesterday, too, against an opener + Erick Fedde. So, you just never know. <title>[Bleacher Nation] - Pre-Gamin’: Cubs vs White Sox (7:05 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread</title>
<description>CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs won a fun one last night over the White Sox at Wrigley Field. With another win tonight, the Cubs would guarantee themselves both a series win and at least a season-series split over the Sox. Given how … eh hem … the rivalry has been this year, that’d be very nice. More importantly, of course, the Cubs need every single win they get while they chase the Brewers. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup behind Kevin Gausman tonight at Wrigley Field. Chicago Cubs Lineup: Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, DH Alex Bregman, 3B Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, SS Pedro Ramirez, 2B Ian Happ, LF Miguel Amaya, C Michael Conforto, RF The White Sox are using a left-handed opener, Bryan Hudson, tonight, followed most likely by righty Erick Fedde. So with that in mind, Ian Happ is starting, but batting seventh. Likewise, Michael Conforto, who is getting the start today as well, is in the Cubs lineup but batting ninth. With those two guys in the game, Dansby Swanson on the IL, and Pedro Ramirez in there at second base, the bench is left with Carson Kelly, Tyrone Taylor, Kevin Alcantara, and Owen Miller. Seiya Suzuki gets a half-day of rest at DH. Chicago White Sox Lineup: Sam Antonacci, LF Munetaka Murakami, 1B Miguel Vargas, 3B Andrew Benintendi, DH Braden Montgomery, RF Colson Montgomery, SS Chase Meidroth, 2B Tristan Peters, CF Drew Romo, C Pitching Matchup: Chicago Cubs: Kevin Gausman’s first start in a Cubs uniform went very well, with 7.0 innings of two-run ball against the Royals in Kansas City. Unfortunately, his follow-up in D.C. did not: 4.2 IP, 7H, 6ER, BB, 7K. Still, Gausman struck out a ton and walked only one in that game. Plus, the Nationals are just a frustratingly good offense this season, even without James Wood. He should have a better matchup against the South Siders today, though they’re not exactly scrubs. There isn’t a ton of history between this version of the Sox and Gausman, but there are two matchups worth highlighting: Andrew Benintendi: 4-19, 2B, BB, 3K Randal Grichuk: 1-9, HR, BB, 2K Gausman doesn’t need to be perfect tonight, but I do think the Cubs are probably considering him on the short list for a potential Game 1 starter in the postseason. So a nice (healthy and productive) run up to October would be VERY good to see. Chicago White Sox: + Erick Fedde, RHP (Bulk) Bryan Hudson, the reliever, is definitely “starting” this game, but he’s likely just an opener for Erick Fedde (though you never know for sure who is coming in for the bulk). Either way, Hudson has a 3.14 ERA over 51.2 IP this season, including six times starting/opening a game (1 ER in 7.0 IP). Although Hudson is a lefty, he’s actually been tougher on righties this season and for his career. Against righties, he throws more four-seamers. Against lefties, he throws more sweepers. He went scoreless in each of his last two outings, but surrendered 3 ER without recording an out against the Reds on August 11. Erick Fedde has swung in and out of the White Sox rotation this year, including four straight out of the bullpen, but does have 12 starts plus ~10 more games as a bulk guy (so still a “starter” approach). His walk rate is around the league average, his strikeout rate is very low, and his line drive rate and fly ball rate are both higher than he’d like. Righties are absolutely crushing Fedde this season (so he’s another reverse-split guy). Fedde faced the Cubs on May 17, coughing up four earned runs on six hits and four walks over 3.0 IP. Note: Michael Busch is 5-for-8 with 2 HRs and 2 BB against Fedde lifetime. <title>[Bleacher Nation] - Chicago Cubs Lineup: Your New Up-the-Middle Infield Defenders</title>
<description>CUBS LINEUP — Get up, rub some dirt on it, and get back out there. That weekend stunk, but there’s more baseball to be played and more games to win … starting tonight with the first of three games against the White Sox at Wrigley Field. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup as Shota Imanaga and company square up against Luis Castillo and the South Siders. Chicago Cubs Lineup: Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, RF Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, SS Pedro Ramirez, 2B Michael Conforto, DH Carson Kelly, C With Dansby Swanson out for at least the next four weeks, take a look at your new everyday middle infield. More times than not, we’re going to see Nico Hoerner at shortstop and Pedro Ramirez at second base. Perhaps, when Matt Shaw is back, he’ll work in some, as well. But for now this is it. Assuming Ramirez doesn’t get overmatched now that he’ll be more exposed, the offense might actually get a modest boost from this. But that view might be a little myopic. Even setting aside the decrease in defense at two spots and the inability for Craig Counsell to play some extra matchups when they favor Ramirez, none of these guys will get nearly as much rest as they probably need. Either way, it feels VERY nice to have a guy like Ramirez around. Well, that and a guy like Nico Hoerner, who can just slide over and play short. Chicago White Sox Lineup: Chase Meidroth, 2B Munetaka Murakami, 1B Miguel Vargas, 3B Randal Grichuk, DH Braden Montgomery, RF Brenton Doyle, CF Sam Antonacci, LF Luisangel Acuña. SS Jake Rogers, C Pitching Matchup: Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga has allowed six home runs over his last three starts, and that’s just about all I can focus on at the moment. When he gets into these meatball-y funks, too many balls fly over the wall, and too many runs score in every outing. So rarely do you have a guy oscillating between moderate dominance and completely unplayable. But that’s basically been the case with Imanaga over these last two years. Now, with that said, only his last start (3 HRs allowed) was actually a bad one overall. The start prior (vs. LAD) featured just one earned run over 5.0 IP. And the one before that (vs. NYY) had just two earned runs (two solo HRs) over 6.2 IP. Still, that’s not a trend I like. And I fear it might continue tonight against a White Sox team that has done well against lefties this year — both overall (106 wRC+, 6th) and in raw homers (49 HR, 6th). The White Sox did not face Imanaga this season. Last year, however, they did, and it went poorly: 3.0 IP, 12H, 7ER, 0BB, 2K (3 HR). In fact, that was literally the second-worst start of Imanaga’s career. Second only to a blowup back in June of his rookie season (2024). Another thing to keep an eye on tonight is Shota Imanaga’s fastball velo, which has dipped down lately. Shota Imanaga’s fastball velo First 19 starts: 91.8 mph Last 5 starts: 90.9 mph *** 2024: 91.7 mph (great season) 2025: 90.8 mph (bad season) Chicago White Sox: The White Sox traded for Luis Castillo at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline and have so far gotten two starts out of the former ace. The first was extremely not good. The second was more vintage Castillo. Which version we get tonight is anyone’s guess! @ BOS: 4.0 IP, 6H, 5ER, 1BB, 5K vs CIN: 7.0 IP, 1H, 0ER, 2BB, 10K Castillo threw more changeups in that second start, which may have been the key for him, especially because lefties have been crushing him all season (and changeups are usually how righties try to neutralize lefties). Likewise, the Cubs have struggled against changeups this season. So I guess be on the lookout for that today. <title>[Bleacher Nation] - Cubs vs White Sox Pitching Probables, Broadcast Info, Injury Report</title>
<description>Cubs vs White Sox — That was not a particularly fun weekend of baseball. Not only did the Cubs drop each of their last two games against the Cardinals, but the Brewers also took their last two against the Dodgers. So now, the Cubs are back to 5.0 games out of first place. On top of that, Edward Cabrera looked awful, and Dansby Swanson suffered an oblique injury that’ll likely keep him out until (at least) the playoffs. And now the Cubs have to face a good White Sox team, which is still fighting for a first-round bye in the playoffs on the AL side. In other words, they still have plenty to play for. Oh, also: The last time these two teams met, PCA made himself into a bit of a villain, so tensions are probably even higher than usual. Also, Shota Imanaga is on the mound tonight with the wind blowing out to left field. To that end, take note: The White Sox have the sixth-best offense vs LHP this season (106 wRC+) with the sixth-most home runs off lefties (49). Speaking of which, that pesky homer problem does seem to have come back for Imanaga, who has now allowed six long balls over his last three games, including three in his last matchup against the Nationals. Only Aaron Nola (30) has given up more home runs than Shota Imanaga has this season (28). And Nola’s got one more start on his ledger. Imanaga is going up against Luis Castillo (now on the White Sox after a deadline deal), who is coming off his best start by Game Score since April 16, 2023: 7.0 IP, 1H, 0ER, 2BB, 10K. That was his second start with the White Sox, however. And his first went a lot more like the rest of his season: 4.0 IP, 6H, 5ER, 1BB, 5K. Tomorrow, Kevin Gausman will make his third start in a Cubs uniform. His first was great; his second … not so much (in terms of results). But I didn’t think he looked all that bad. That said, the Nationals just straight up stopped offering at his splitter and were hammering his four-seamer. So let’s keep an eye on that this week. Hopefully, Gausman isn’t tipping his pitches or something. The White Sox haven’t officially listed their starter for Tuesday, but Erick Fedde is a good bet. Recently, Fedde has been swinging in and out of the Sox bullpen, most recently throwing 3.0 innings of relief against the Reds (5H, 4ER, 2BB, K). And the afternoon finale on Wednesday will mark the third start in a Cubs uniform for Clay Holmes. Holmes has so far been the opposite experience of Gausman, with a poor first start as a Cub and a much better second outing: 6.2 IP, 1H, 0ER, 1BB, 3K. In both outings, Holmes generated a TON of ground balls … though I’d be more excited about that if the Cubs didn’t just lose Dansby Swanson. Again, the Sox have not listed an official starter for Wednesday, but the probables grid favors Jose Urquidy, who has thrown just 10.0 innings in the big leagues this season. Beyond that, he’s made 20 starts at Triple-A with a 3.48 ERA. All things considered, I think all three matchups favor the Cubs. But as this weekend reminded us, baseball rarely goes the way you expect.
