Recurring structural flaws continue to plague this team, and after ten games, Buffalo has held a lead heading into the third period exactly ZERO times. While that speaks to the Sabres’ ability to battle back and claw their way into games, it’s hardly a sustainable way to operate over an 84-game season. The problems are piling up, and what might have been dismissed as isolated issues early in the season has snowballed into one very lost and listless hockey team. Inconsistency, costly mistakes, and an inability to put together a complete 60-minute effort have fans wondering whether this team actually turned a corner last season — or if Buffalo simply rode the lightning of an incredible hot streak all the way back to the playoffs. Right now, the same old problems are rearing their ugly heads, joined by a few new ones that this team seems increasingly incapable of solving. Key Issues Behind the Slow Start: Inconsistent Goaltending and Defense: The Sabres rank near the bottom of the league in goals-against average, sitting 26th in the NHL, and have been hampered by inconsistent performances in net. Their numbers are even uglier at five-on-five, where they rank dead last at 32nd in the league. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has taken much of the heat, but pinning the blame solely on the goaltender is an easy way to ignore the bigger problem. Buffalo’s defense deserves its share of the criticism. Opponents are routinely left wide open in front of the net, the crease goes uncleared, and monumental breakdowns and costly turnovers continue to put Luukkonen in tough situations. No goaltender can consistently bail out a defense that makes life this difficult. Still, we’d all like to see an extra save or two from him each game. Neither is playing particularly well and that is a combo nobody wants. Struggling Special Teams: The power play and penalty kill have been a continuous source of frustration for both fans and the media. Buffalo’s man advantage has been downright abysmal at times, showing little urgency and spending far too much time chasing the puck back into its own zone. When the Sabres finally manage to set up, they seem more interested in passing the puck around in search of the perfect shot than actually taking one. Inevitably, the opportunity goes up in smoke with a costly turnover, and the whole frustrating cycle starts all over again. The penalty kill has recently overtaken the power play as Buffalo’s biggest special-teams sore spot. The Sabres have surrendered a power-play goal in every game but one so far this season, and they currently sit 30th in the league with a miserable 66.7% success rate. Is there a word out there worse than abysmal? Whatever it is, it probably isn’t fit to print here. Playing From Behind: Buffalo has repeatedly found itself chasing games early, and the constant need for comebacks is beginning to take its toll. Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers showed that the Sabres don’t always have enough left in the tank to pull off another escape act. Before that game, Buffalo had trailed for a staggering 250:57, the fourth-highest total in the NHL. By comparison, the Sabres have held a lead for just 60:32 all season — barely the equivalent of one full game. Between the uneven goaltending, defensive breakdowns, and a laundry list of players failing to produce offensively, Buffalo is making life far harder than it needs to be. Considering how often this team has been forced to claw its way back from the brink of defeat, it’s a miracle the Sabres have managed to scrape together as many points as they have. That act is going to wear thin though. This team needs to put together a more consistent, 60-minute effort — something we have yet to see this season. Offseason Regression Concerns: Buffalo had a difficult summer with roster turnover, and the early results have amplified worries about replicating last year’s success. Regression was expected from the national media right on down to our own fanbase. Nobody expected a repeat performance with the loss of Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram. A 4-4-2 record isn’t the end of the world, but at times, it sure feels that way. For much of the season, just about everything that could go wrong has gone wrong for Buffalo. Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs remain without a goal, while Ryan McLeod, Josh Doan, Konsta Helenius, and Jiri Kulich have managed just one goal apiece. Josh Norris has struggled as well, with only two goals and three points to his name. The defensive play and goaltending have been suspect, and the forwards haven’t exactly been helping matters with their backchecking. The Sabres continue to fall behind early and often, while the special teams have been downright awful. When performances are this consistently poor, questions about the coaching staff will arise too.
