On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by longtime Buffalo Sabres pregame and postgame host Brian Koziol to discuss the Sabres, the most rewarding year of his WGR career and much more, recorded live at Imperial Pizza in South Buffalo.

Brian's been at WGR since 2001 and has been doing the pregame and postgame shows since 2007-08. They talk about many of those lean years and how negative the job could be when the team is perennially bad, specifically having to deal with often irate callers following games and seasons. However, things turned around seemingly overnight this past season and Brian not only got to host playoffs games, but into the second round for the first time in his career.

They also spend plenty of time talking about the team, being happy with the season and ready to raise the bar for the future. How will they handle this offseason? Lots of options are on the table.

Also, Brian discusses the live pregame/postgame Sabres show he's hosted on WGR for a long time. That plus the changing landscape of teaching media to students and tons more

Jordan Kyrou is the ALEX TUCH REPLACEMENT the Buffalo Sabres should be shooting for

If the Buffalo Sabres walk away from an Alex Tuch extension, there are very few players they could acquire to replace his production. St. Louis Blues winger Jordan Kyrou would be one of them and there is reason to believe he is available for trade. Kyrou and the Blues may have animosity that makes him available. A 28 year old, three time 30 goal scorer, that is under contract for 5 years at $8.1 million is the perfect guy to play on the Sabres top line going forward. Is Kyrou still that player after a down year of just 18 goals? A lesser role in the Blues lineup, a minor knee injury, and getting in the coaches doghouse all contributed to just 18 goals. On the Sabres it would likely go a lot better.

With the age and contract of Kyrou, he would cost a lot to get. Luckily for the Sabres, there's evidence that the Blues are very interested in acquiring Radim Mrtka, maybe trying to do it twice already. Would a 1st round pick on top of Mrtka be enough for Kyrou? The Sabres may have to add one more player in to get the deal done.

Connor Hellebuyck would make the Buffalo Sabres STANLEY CUP FAVORITES

There are going to be big trade ideas for the Buffalo Sabres in the summer of 2026, but none will be bigger than trading for Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. There is plenty of reason to believe Hellebuyck wants to be done in Winnipeg and wants to go somewhere where he can win the Stanley Cup. The Sabres should be one of the teams on the list. Sneaky Joe believes if Hellebuyck were to be acquired by the Sabres, they would be Stanley Cup favorites, in at least the Eastern Conference. Despite three Vezina Trophies and a Hart Trophy, there is some doubt as to whether Hellebuyck is still the player he once was, after a down year. Joe breaks down his 2025-26 season and historical data of goalies at his age to show that you should believe he is still in the middle of his prime.

What would the trade cost? Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen would almost certainly have to be in the deal going back to the Jets. Pairing Hellebuyck with Alex Lyon could create the perfect environment not to exhaust Hellebuyck, and get the most out of him come playoff time.

Will Alex Tuch re-sign with the Sabres? That is a key, probably the key offseason storyline with the Sabres as Tuch's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. There's plenty of reason to very much want Tuch back but also financial reasons to move on from him. Where does Patrick fall on this?

Sticking with the Sabres, Patrick put up a poll involving a trade scenario for St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas and was shocked at the results. Are fans overvaluing young prospects a little too much?

Moving over to the Bills, Patrick's pretty fascinated with not knowing what the new Jim Leonhard defense is going to actually look like and which Bills veteran defenders will be the best fits for it. He explains why it will actually make training camp and possibly even the preseason more must-see than normal.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by podcaster and blogger Chris Ostrander to discuss a handful of Buffalo Sabres season ending topics, including taking a look at what a potential goaltender trade market should look like should Jarmo Kekäläinen decide to try and swing a deal.

Obviously this was a breakthrough season for the Sabres and the team looks poised to have a sustainable run at the Eastern conference in the coming years. However, the most uncertain aspect of the team arguably is goaltender despite having three guys all under contracts for next year: UPL, Alex Lyon and Colton Ellis in addition to Devon Levi in Rochester.

Chris takes a look at a handful of goalies around the league at least worth discussing in some capacity for trades should their respective teams find a Buffalo package that would make it worth moving on from.

They also discuss the Alex Tuch conundrum. Despite the woeful performance against Montreal Tuch's still a valued commodity and the Sabres will and should want him back. But at what price? Chris has thoughts on what he thinks Buffalo should do and where they should set the hard line at.

The guys also discuss bonus bright spots that emerged from the Buffalo playoff run that were at least somewhat unexpected with Noah Ostlund and Konsta Helenius. That plus what current Sabres could carry some value in the trade market and much more.
