You usually don’t find those guys falling to the 139th overall selection. But Shaw became that guy, authoring some iconic moments that included a header and loving shin pads. He emerged as a guy the Blackhawks needed at a time when they didn’t have a lot coming up thru the organization to help sustain their core. Shaw was eventually traded to the Canadiens, and then he became one of the guys who was brought back to the organization for a second run by Stan Bowman. That didn’t play out as well as anyone hoped at the time. Looking back at Shaw’s career, his two runs with the Blackhawks produced a trade tree(s) that are going to have a big impact on the Chicago Blackhawks in the immediate future — 15 years after he was drafted. Let’s get into the trail of Shaw. Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw Andrew Shaw Blackhawks Trade Tree No. 1 June 24, 2016 — Blackhawks trade forward Andrew Shaw to the Montreal Canadiens for two second-round picks in the 2016 NHL Draft (No. 39 — Alex DeBrincat; No. 45 — Chad Krys). Shaw was part of two Stanley Cup championship teams with the Blackhawks, but the time had apparently arrived to move on from him. Montreal called, and offered a couple second-round picks. The Blackhawks accepted, and drafted one player who has gone on to have a very nice NHL career (and became one of Patrick Kane‘s best linemates and friends). Dec. 9, 2021 — Blackhawks trade Krys to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Kurtis Gabriel. Gabriel was a big forward; the Blackhawks didn’t have many/any of those. He appeared in two games for Chicago. Net zero move here. July 7, 2022 — Blackhawks trade DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for picks in the first (No. 7 — Kevin Korchinski) and second (No. 39 — Paul Ludwinski) rounds of the 2022 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 72 — AJ Spellacy). With Kyle Davidson beginning to call the shots in Chicago, the summer of 2022 began the rebuild in earnest. The teardown began with the Blackhawks owning no picks in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft and ended with them making three selections. The first of those picks was Korchinski, whose development has been tough but is still ongoing. Ludwinski’s AHL time has been hurt by injuries, and the depth of the pipeline has swelled around him to the point that he now appears to be a long shot to make the NHL with the Blackhawks. But the player who might have the most hype around him from this deal at this point might be Spellacy, who could be a big, power forward who contributes to the Blackhawks’ bottom six in a meaningful way. This deal wound up being a bad beat for the Senators, who traded DeBrincat to Detroit one year later for two players (ironically including Blackhawks legend Dominik Kubalik), a late-first round pick and a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Giving up a top-ten pick for one year of DeBrincat still burns some Ottawa fans. Blackhawks defenseman Louis Crevier. Andrew Shaw Blackhawks Trade Tree No. 2 The second Shaw trade tree begins with two more trades with the Montreal Canadiens. June 30, 2019 — the Blackhawks traded picks in the second and seventh rounds of the 2020 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft to the Montreal Canadiens to bring Shaw back to Chicago. The Blackhawks also acquired Montreal’s seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Shaw came back and appeared in only 40 games before injuries ended his career. None of the three players selected with the picks the Habs acquired in the deal every appeared in an NHL game for Montreal. Oct. 7, 2020 — a reminder that the 2020 NHL Draft took place in October because of COVID. During the draft, the Blackhawks traded Montreal’s seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft back to the Canadiens for a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft (No. 188 — Louis Crevier). Crevier was tall. That as the extent of his scouting report when the Blackhawks selected him near the end of the 2020 NHL Draft. We watched him work hard and develop into a viable NHL defenseman who became a reliable part of Chicago’s rotation this past season. Side branch: June 23, 2023 — the Blackhawks traded Future Considerations to the New York Islanders for a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and the contract of Josh Bailey. The Islanders dumped Bailey’s contract on the Blackhawks at the cost of a future second-round pick. He retired. June 23, 2026 — the Blackhawks traded their own first-round pick (No. 4 overall) and the Islanders’ second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and Crevier to the Buffalo Sabres and forward Jordan Greenway.
