[Cleveland Guardians Perspective] - 2026 Draft - Final Comments

Let's start off by saying what every 'expert' says about a draft. It's impossible to determine whether a draft is a good one for 5 years. The problem with that axiom is that if you get to the end of that 5 year period, and you are a limited-resource team AND that draft stunk, you are probably struggling to put a good team on the field. So, while you can't FULLY tell how a draft will turn out for 5 years, you can make some pretty clear statements about how the draft will impact your team in the future. WHERE WE WERE BEFORE THE DRAFT Starting Pitching - We have the most solid SP group in the majors and all of them are pretty young. The issue is that we have very little depth after that starting 5. Logan Allen is the only experienced SP at Columbus. We have other SP options at Columbus but they are not top level starters. Peterson and Maltrud are soft tossers and Yorman Gomez has very little experience above AA. Campbell became an interesting prospect until he was hurt again. Below AAA we have one solid SP prospect at the moment, but this pitcher, Braylon Doughty, has 3 starts at AA and likely won't be ready for the majors until the middle of 2028. We are really devoid of gifted SP prospects aside from Doughty. Outfielders/First basemen - We have several young and talented OF and 1B guys in Cleveland. We have depth at all levels of the minors with some top prospects among that group. That depth appears to be poised to make the ML starting this fall and over the next few years. Catchers - We are deepest at catcher all the way from Cleveland down to Akron, with at least 7 catchers at those 3 levels. If there is one position we don't need to draft it is at catcher. Infielders - We are set in Cleveland with middle infielders although we have top prospects in the infield at all levwels. Utility Men and Relief Pitchers - These are generally guys who have talent and versatility but not enough to be full=time players or impact pitchers. Saying that, we have lots of guys in the minors who are developing versatility to possibly become bit players on the Guardians in the future. HOW DID WE DO IN THE 2026 DRAFT Pitching - We got one college SP and 2 HS starting pitchers. While the 2 guys we got are good, they won't be enough to fill our starting pitching pipeline Outfield/First base - We got a couple of slap hitting outfielders and one power-limited first base prospect. We have failed to develop slap hitting outfielders in the past. Middle Infielders - We got no middle infielders of note in this draft Catcher - We got one middling catching prospect Organization players - These are guys who have little chance to make the majors but are needed to fill out rosters so true prospects can play. Every player we drafted after round 6 (13 in all) fall into this category. SUMMARY We got 3 impact types in this draft, 1 college SP who might be ready by mid 2026 and 2 HS pitchers who might be ready by 2030. None of the other 17 players we projected appear to be more than borderline ML players or organzational soldiers with no real chance of playing in the majors. Unless Peterson becomes Gavin Williams, part deux, this draft is already a disaster before we know who signs. Bit players and two impact SP who won't be ready until 2030 only helps the ML team if we can trade them for ML help. I give this draft a B- if the 3 SP work out but, right now, considering just how it will impact the ML team in the next 3+ years, I give this draft a D. A small market team needs to do better than this in the draft and that starts with not trading draft picks and ends with drafting guys who can help the ML team sooner rather than later. And we need to draft better in later rounds, not just wave the white flag because we don't have money to take risks with. So, Cleveland fans, let's hop Peterson quickly turns into a Cy Young-caliber SP in cleveland because, without that, Cleveland's version of the baseball groundhog is going to see his shadow when he looks at this draft. Good night and good luck!
