[The Spokesman-Review] - Cedric Coward delivers highlight block, posts double-double in Summer League loss

LAS VEGAS – Cedric Coward was on the right end of a play that could appear on a Summer League highlight reel in a weeks’ time and nearly on the wrong end of another. Coward’s submission for the top defensive highlight of Summer League came midway through the first quarter of Memphis’ 96-88 loss to Dallas at the Thomas & Mack Center. With the Mavericks’ Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu slashing to the rim, Coward set his feet just inside the restricted area before springing off both feet to meet Dallas’s 6-foot-10 center at the rim. The former Washington State and Eastern Washington wing cleanly spiked the ball out of Akobundu-Ehiogu’s hands, but it spilled to Dallas teammate Darin Green Jr., who converted the second-chance opportunity. Defense has been a point of emphasis for the former Washington State and Eastern Washington wing in Las Vegas. Coward was mostly a plus on that end during Memphis’ second Summer League game, aside from one slip-up that arrived a minute after the highlight block. Dallas’ Sergio de Larrea caught Coward flat-footed, using a crossover to send the second-year Memphis wing to the ground. De Larrea couldn’t capitalize on the crafty dribble move, misfiring on the ensuing step-back 3-pointer. Coward struggled with offensive efficiency but the former Coug and Eag still managed to post a double-double, scoring 17 points to go with 12 rebounds, four assists, five turnovers, one block, one steal and five fouls. Coward finished 7 of 23 from the field, 2 of 9 from the 3-point line and 1 of 2 from the free throw line. Former Gonzaga point guard Ryan Nembhard sat out for Dallas with illness. Nembhard had 27 points and 16 assists through the Mavericks’ first two games in Las Vegas. “That’s a day by day thing,” Mavericks Summer League coach Joe Boylan said. “We’ll just figure it out and play it by ear as we go.” The Mavericks improved to 1-2 at Summer League while the Grizzlies dropped to 1-1. Jones stays consistent Isaac Jones continues to provide consistent scoring, rebounding and defensive hustle for Detroit’s Summer League squad. The Pistons came up short in an 86-75 loss to the New York Knicks, but Jones was one of Detroit’s three double-digit scorers and led them in rebounding with 12 points and eight boards. The former Washington State and Idaho forward made 4 of 9 shots from the field, missed both of his 3-point attempts and went 2 of 4 from the free throw line. Jones, one of the veteran members of Detroit’s Summer League roster, also had two assists, one steal, one block and two turnovers. Jack Kayil, who was signed to play at Gonzaga for roughly five months before electing to keep his name in the NBA Draft, led New York with 19 points and tied for the team lead with four assists. Kayil finished 6 of 13 from the field, 3 of 7 from the 3-point line and 2 of 3 from the free throw line. He also had three steals and one rebound. Other locals… • Gonzaga’s Jalen Warley made his Summer League debut with the Indiana Pacers, playing 18 minutes in a 94-93 loss to the Toronto Raptors. Warley scored four points off the bench, going 1 of 2 from the field and 1 of 1 from the free throe line. He added three rebounds, three steals and one assist. Spokane native and former Mt. Spokane High/Boise State standout Tyson Degenhart didn’t see the floor for Toronto.

[The Spokesman-Review] - Gonzaga learns tipoff time for Players Era Festival opener against Kansas State

Gonzaga fans may have to adjust their sleep schedules to catch the team’s opening game at the Players Era Festival in November. Gonzaga and Kansas State will meet in the Players Era nightcap on Nov. 24, tipping off at 9:30 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It’s the eighth and final game on the opening day of the Thanksgiving week tournament featuring 16 programs from the Pac-12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Big 12. All Players Era games will air on the ESPN family of networks after the tournament signed a multi-year agreement with the media company earlier this year. The tournament has yet to assign specific TV designations for its opening-round games. The Gonzaga-Kansas State winner will play the winner of Baylor and Alabama on Nov. 26 at T-Mobile Arena. Gonzaga could play one of four teams – TCU, Miami, Creighton or Michigan – in its third game on Nov. 27 at T-Mobile. The two teams that advance through the bracket with 3-0 records will meet in the Nov. 28 championship game at Michelob Ultra Arena. All other teams will go home after their third game in Vegas. Gonzaga won games against Alabama and Maryland to book a spot in the championship game at last year’s tournament before absorbing a 40-point loss to eventual national champion Michigan. The Zags have slipped in most way-too-early preseason Top 25 polls since the abrupt departure of starting point guard Mario Saint-Supery, but Mark Few’s team should still be favored in its Players Era opener against a Kansas State team that isn’t appearing in preseason rankings.

[The Spokesman-Review] - Ryan Nembhard leads Mavericks scorers in loss to former Gonzaga teammate Anton Watson | Summer League

LAS VEGAS – Ryan Nembhard and Anton Watson exchanged handshakes and hugs before Saturday night’s NBA Summer League clash between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers.

It was all friendly until bragging rights were on the line for the former Gonzaga teammates, who both started and contributed in Saturday’s nightcap at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Nembhard was the top scorer for Dallas, but Watson and Los Angeles pulled away thanks to a third-quarter surge and prevailed 91-70 to win their second game at Vegas Summer League.

Nembhard, who set single-season assist records during both of his seasons at Gonzaga, took on facilitating and scoring duties for Dallas, scoring 12 points on 3 of 11 shooting and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. The Canadian point guard also recorded five assists, five turnovers, two rebounds and one steal.

One night after scoring 15 points in the Lakers’ win over Oklahoma City, Watson didn’t have the same success on the offensive end against Dallas, missing both of his shots from the field and finishing scoreless in 13 minutes.

The former Gonzaga forward and Gonzaga Prep standout still left his imprint on the game, coming up with two steals while taking on a daunting defensive assignment for the second straight night.

Watson was the main defender on 6-foot-9 Dallas rookie Morez Johnson Jr., the ninth overall pick of the recent NBA Draft. Johnson Jr., who won the 2026 national championship with Michigan, finished with 10 points on 4 of 7 from the field, but made all four of his shots when Watson was on Los Angeles’ bench.

The 6-foot-8 Watson deflected a post pass from Dallas guard Sergio de Larrea to Johnson in the second quarter for one his two steals. Johnson returned the favor with a block on Watson later on in the quarter.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Watson had success guarding another member of Michigan’s national championship frontcourt, holding 7-foot-3 Oklahoma City center Aday Mara – the 12th overall draft pick – without any field goals in a 96-84 Los Angeles victory.

Nembhard lost to not one, but two former college teammates during Saturday’s game. Los Angeles’ Arthur Kaluma, who played two seasons with Nembhard at Creighton, erupted for a game-high 34 points, finishing 11 of 16 from the field and 6 of 10 from the 3-point line.

Abogidi contributes in Denver win

Efe Abogodi didn’t need much time to settle in making his NBA Summer League debut on Saturday for the Denver Nuggets.

The former Washington State forward didn’t see the floor in Denver’s opening game in Vegas, but was in coach J.J. Barea’s plans against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Abogidi was scoring at point-per-minute pace in the first half, totaling 10 points during a seven-minute stint off Denver’s bench. The 24-year-old wasn’t able to add to his point total in the second half, finishing with 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting and 2 of 4 from the 3-point line. Abogidi also had four rebounds and one steal in 13 minutes, helping the Nuggets cruise for a 101-82 victory at the Pavilion.

“I was going to give him a chance today, he didn’t play yesterday,” Barea said. “I just give him confidence, if you’re open, let it fly. He had some good blocks, some good rebounds and then he made some open shots so great job by him, too.”

One of Efe Abogidi’s former WSU teammates, TJ Bamba, is also on Denver’s Summer League roster and played 17 minutes off the bench Saturday, scoring seven points on 2 of 8 from the field and 1 of 4 from the 3-point line.

Other locals

• Former Gonzaga wings Tyon Grant-Foster (San Antonio Spurs) and Jalen Warley (Indiana Pacers) didn’t play for their respective Summer League teams on Saturday.

• Tyson Degenhart, a Spokane native and former Mount Spokane High standout, didn’t score and missed his only two shot attempts in Toronto’s 102-89 Summer League loss to the Houston Rockets. Former WSU big man Oscar Cluff, who also played at South Dakota State and Purdue, scored six points and grabbed five rebounds for Houston.

• One-time Gonzaga signee Jack Kayil debuted at Summer League for the New York Knicks, scoring 12 points on 5 of 14 from the field and 2 of 7 from the 3-point line. Kayil signed with the Zags last November, but elected to keep his name in the NBA Draft. The combo guard was selected by New York with the 39th overall pick.

• Hunter Sallis, who spent two seasons at Gonzaga before transferring to Wake Forest, didn’t score in seven minutes for the Brooklyn Nets, missing his only shot attempt against the Atlanta Hawks.
