How media access around Inter Miami has shifted in the Messi era as Unique FC’s role has grown

When Lionel Messi arrived at Inter Miami, his presence did more than just elevate the team’s quality and popularity. It also reshaped how the team communicates.

At the center of that shift in recent months has been Unique FC.

A public relations firm connected to Messi, Unique FC emerged as an increasingly visible presence within Inter Miami’s ecosystem during the latter parts of the 2025 MLS season and start of 2026. The firm has worked in conjunction with Inter Miami’s internal communications staff, with multiple people familiar with the team’s day-to-day operations noting a broader shift in how media access is being handled.

Unique FC describes itself on its website as “experts when it comes to protecting the image of elite athletes” with a “vast network of media contacts across the world.” The firm adds that its work includes communications, social media, public relations, and brand partnerships aimed at managing and elevating their clients’ public image.

In practice, however, Unique FC’s role within the Inter Miami ecosystem has gone beyond traditional public relations functions. Multiple people familiar with the South Florida team’s daily operations have noted a layered communications environment dating back to last year, with access gradually tightening.

That approach is not always visible publicly, but it has influenced what media is able to capture. One recent example came during Inter Miami’s open training session at Nu Stadium on April 2, when the team invited select media to the practice that served as the venue’s soft opening.

Press in attendance was able to film inside the stadium, while outside areas — still filled with construction machinery, unfinished infrastructure, and gravel — were not a focus of the media availability.

Another example took place in February during Inter Miami’s trip to Puerto Rico for a friendly vs. Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle. Inter Miami told a handful of local reporters that they would be able to participate in a pre-game press conference with then-head coach Javier Mascherano and right back Facundo Mura via Zoom.

The reporters preselected to ask a question were, however, told beforehand which interview subject their question was to be directed to. (You can see the alternating strategy in effect in the video below starting at the 27:00 mark.)

The controlled approach has also extended to post-game access and league-mandated media availability. MLS policy calls for locker rooms to open to accredited press after a “15-minute cool-down period”, with all players and coaches made available for interviews during “a minimum 30-minute” media access period.

Inter Miami has not followed that policy since Messi’s arrival in July 2023, despite previously adhering to it. Whether the team has faced any disciplinary action from MLS regarding those practices is unclear, but Inter Miami did not make any players available for interviews following the season-opening 3-0 road loss to LAFC on Feb. 21.

What’s more, recently-constructed Nu Stadium includes a designated ‘Mixed Zone’ area that further structures how media access is granted. Reporters and select players are brought into the ‘Mixed Zone’ room for post-game interviews.

Inter Miami did not immediately respond to request for comment.

When exactly Unique FC became embedded within Inter Miami’s communications operations is not entirely clear, but the firm’s presence became more visible during a period of internal change.

Senior director of communications Rafael Cabrera and communications manager Michael Franca — members of the Inter Miami’s communications staff since the inaugural 2020 season — both left their posts within weeks of one another in August 2025. Franca took on a role outside of the organization following Inter Miami’s loss to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final on Aug. 31, while Cabrera transitioned to a role away from the first team but still within Inter Miami earlier that month.

Multiple sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, told Miami Total Futbol that a locker room exchange involving Messi and Cabrera occurred during that same period.

Several of those sources described the interaction as beginning with inadvertent physical contact between Messi and Cabrera, though accounts of the exchange beyond that point varied. The specifics of what transpired remain unclear, but those familiar with the situation said it happened during a broader stretch of internal change within the organization.

Cabrera declined to comment for this story.

In the weeks following Cabrera and Franca’s departures, Unique FC co-founder and director Roberto Treviño arrived to take on a visible role within Inter Miami’s communications ecosystem. Treviño assisted with responsibilities previously handled by Cabrera and Franca — including coordinating media availability at training sessions and managing post-game interviews — up through the MLS Cup Final in December.

Roberto Treviño is one of two contacts listed on Unique FC’s website.

Treviño was seen at Inter Miami practice as recently as on April 15, when new coach Guillermo Hoyos had his first media interview.

Treviño’s presence has continued into 2026. He aided in the transition to a new head of communications: Adria Albets, a fellow Spaniard who covered FC Barcelona as a media member prior to joining Inter Miami.

Albets’ presence has not entirely replaced that of Treviño, who was seen as recently as two weeks ago at Inter Miami practice.

Treviño did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Despite that on-the-ground involvement, neither Treviño nor Unique FC nor Albets is listed on Inter Miami or Major league Soccer’s official websites as part of team staff. Inter Miami has also not formally outlined the firm’s role within the communications structure, but Unique FC’s growing presence has coincided with a more controlled media environment that is limiting player availability.

Inter Miami and MLS staff listings do not include any Unique FC personnel.

Star veterans Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suarez have not been made available for any media scrums or press conferences in 2026. Messi has also not spoken to local press corps this year, though he has notably done so just once since arriving in July 2023.

Inter Miami has also gone from having as many as three players available for practice interviews during a regular week in 2025 to as little as one in recent times. For example, Mura is the only player scheduled to speak to local press this week ahead of Saturday’s rivalry showdown with arch-nemesis Orlando City.

Together, these developments reflect a more contained and structured approach to media access in the Messi era. The recent changes have come alongside the growing role of Unique FC, whose position at Inter Miami remains largely undefined publicly despite a visible presence.
