Jamahl Mosley Hired as Pelicans Head Coach on Five-Year Deal

The Pelicans are hiring Jamahl Mosley as their next head coach. The former Orlando Magic coach, just two weeks removed from a tough playoff series against the Detroit Pistons, has agreed to a five-year contract. The hire ends a coaching search to fill the vacancy created by the midseason dismissal of Willie Green in November. “Jamahl has earned tremendous respect across the NBA for his leadership, professionalism, and the strong relationships he develops with players and staff,” said Dumars in the press release. “He has consistently demonstrated an ability to develop young talent while establishing teams that compete with toughness, discipline, and togetherness. His teams reflect his coaching style through their defensive intensity, effort, preparation, and commitment to playing the right way. Those qualities reinforce the long-term stability of a winning culture.”

Five years represents as significant commitment so let’s break down some immediate implications.

What Mosley Does Well — and Where the Questions Are

Mosley built something real in Orlando. He took over a 21-win team and steadily constructed one of the league’s better defensive organizations, making three consecutive playoff appearances and developing young talent into meaningful NBA contributors. His reputation for player development and defensive identity is something the Pelicans have keyed in on.

The offensive side is a different story. In five seasons with the Magic, Mosley’s teams never finished higher than 18th in offensive efficiency. For a franchise that needs to maximize the talent of Zion Williamson, and develop a young core that includes Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen, offensive creativity and system-building will matter enormously.

How Mosley fills out his staff will go a long way toward answering that question. Surrounding himself with offensive-minded assistants who can complement his defensive strengths will be paramount to the team’s success. The staff he assembles in the coming weeks will tell us as much about this hire as anything Mosley says in his introductory press conference.

The Roster Needs Work

Joe Dumars was explicit in his end-of-season press conference about the Pelicans not being a slow build. “We believe we’re gonna win,” he said, “We don’t believe we are that far away from winning.”

Mosley now inherits a roster that won 26 games with significant roster needs. Rebounding, rim protection, and shooting are key areas where the Pelican need improvement and it’s now on Dumars and his staff to furnish Mosley with the talent. Even though the front office may feel strongly about the strength of their roster, Mosley cannot be set up to fail with obvious holes.

The other question worth pondering is if an aggressive, “win-now” approach is truly the right path for this Pelicans team. Five years of job security allows for a longer runway. The Pelicans and Mosley could opt for a more deliberate, developmental approach that caters to the strengths of both Mosley as a player developer and Weaver as a talent identifier.

The Pelicans are already split among two contractual timelines, and so taking a slower approach allows the team to focus on their younger players and build more strategically in a competitive space that currently features the Thunder and Spurs at the top of the Western Conference. The Pelicans have a real opportunity to get more salary lean, asset rich, and position themselves favorably heading into the era of expansion.

The Contract

A five-year deal sends a clear message from ownership that the financial commitment is real. In a market that has historically struggled to attract and retain top-tier coaching talent, dollars and years matter, and the Pelicans delivered on both.

But the parallels are hard to ignore. This mirrors the move Troy Weaver made in Detroit when he signed Monty Williams to a six-year, $78.5 million deal — the largest coaching contract in NBA history at the time. Williams was fired after one season. The Pistons still owe him the majority of that deal.

Mosley’s situation is different in important ways. He had two years and approximately $14 million remaining on his Orlando contract when the Magic fired him, sources tell In The N.O. Another head coaching opportunity this cycle was far from guaranteed. New Orleans wanted him badly and Mosley likely knew it. Various outlets nationally and locally have reported on the Pelicans’ interest in Mosley since November. The result feels like a market where the Pelicans got squeezed — overpaying in both years and dollars for a coach who had limited leverage elsewhere and understood exactly how much the organization valued him.

Is five years the price of doing business in a market like New Orleans, or a genuine reflection of how highly this organization values him?

What Comes Next

With the coaching hire resolved, the attention now turns to the rest of the organizational build. The front office restructuring is still underway with dozens of positions still left to fill. Sources tell In The N.O. the Pelicans have identified two key hires on the medical and performance side and are in the process of finalizing paperwork. But major hires in strategy and analytics still remain. The Pelicans brass have begun the draft process and traveled to the Chicago combine without a fully functioning analytics department in place.

Team sources insist Dumars and ownership are steadfastly committed to building out the full organization in New Orleans with no resource constraints. Mosley comes from an Orlando organization with a state-of-the art practice facility and significant investments in strategy, player care, and amenities. The Pelicans must continue to invest in those areas and equip Mosley with every tool that is needed to succeed.
