Wagner proved essential to making the team's defense and offense work. His absence was the decisive factor not only in the Playoffs, but the entire season. His return and potential to play the majority of the season is the reason there can be any optimism for the Magic this season.

Still, the Magic will need more from Wagner. They will need him not only to provide his trademark versatility. They need Wagner to become a true star and be aggressive looking to score to take their next leap.

The Orlando Magic have proven to varying degrees that they are built for the Playoffs. All three of this group's playoff series have gone longer than anyone expected. They still have yet to get a win.

How do the Magic turn those small steps into playoff victories? How do they get there to take advantage of their playoff-ready play style?

That will come down to the stars taking a step. It will also take Jalen Suggs helping lift the team's ceiling once again. They need a consistent showing from their point guard to get over the hump and take that critical next step.

Orlando will also need plenty of other players to step up to help them make a difference this season. They could get a big lift from the development of Noah Penda or the scoring from Nikola Vucevic. But it also means getting a huge bench lift from Anthony Black.

There are a lot of things that could help the Magic take a major leap this season.

The Orlando Magic will be sorting out several key rotation spots when training camp begins in four weeks. Those got put more in flux with underwhelming performances from Goga Bitadze and Tristan da Silva at FIBA World Cup Qualifying this weekend.

Neither player played poorly. But neither showed a big step forward, putting their rotation spots in jeopardy as training camp approaches.

Nikola Vucevic will likely take over the backup center spot with his scoring ability, leaving Goga Bitadze to remain the spot starter when injuries hit. He has struggled to show the consistency needed to claim the spot.

Tristan da Silva is set up to be a solid floor spacer and 3-point shooter. He has a big role to play. But if he struggles to make shots from deep, he could lose his spot too.

Especially with Noah Penda making strides more and more. Penda had a strong Summer League and appears to have had a strong rest of his offseason. His development could be a tipping point for the Magic this season.

The Orlando Magic's bright future now faces a ton of uncertainty after their disappointing 2026 season. The Magic have not only lost most of the benefit of the doubt, but they now face the potential of being stuck in salary cap prison with now draft picks to supplement the roster.

Everything for the Magic starts with the star players in Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The world has lost some faith in the team's star duo after two injury-filled seasons.

But Orlando also has no easy path out. Their future is tied up in their roster. Without their own first-round picks until the 2031 Draft, the Magic must find a way to make this roster work . . . or rely on trades down the line to make improvements. All while dancing around the aprons.

There is still hope for the Magic, however. They are still young enough to bounce back. And better injury luck could provide the path forward the Magic are desperate to find.

Both Jalen Suggs and Wendell Carter are in the immediate crosshairs as the Magic aim to improve. They have both carved themselves out as essential defensive players. But both are trying to elevate their game to a championship level.

Suggs' intensity is essential to the Magic's defense and their reaching their ceiling. But he can often be out of control and inconsistent in the details. That ultimately dooms him and prevents him from playing his best at critical moments.

Carter has the opposite problem. He is very solid and always in the right spot. But he can struggle to elevate his game and make the championship-level plays that could make the Magic contenders.

The Magic will be feeling the pressure from all sides. And Carter and Suggs could prove to be huge pressure points and swing players for the Magic and their Playoff hopes.

The Heart and Hustle team still resonates with Magic fans as a baseline standard for the team. Magic fans expect their team to play hard and with intensity every night to live up to that team's legacy.

That was something the Magic struggled with last year. Despite their talent and ability, everyone could sense something was off. And it was this intangible grit and determination that defined not only the 2000 team but the previous four seasons with this group.
