[Broad Street Hockey] - Flyers have just one week to sign Jamie Drysdale and Trevor Zegras before arbitration

While the Philadelphia Flyers could get plenty busy wheeling and dealing for the rest of the summer, as they try to maybe recover from not getting Leo Carlsson despite their historic offer sheet, the main piece of business they have to do is get a couple of restricted free agents signed. And now we know that they have just over a week to really get their business done. Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale are two fairly high-profile restricted free agents for the Flyers, who should get sizeable raises from their contracts that expired. Especially considering that both players are entering their age where they could reasonable commit long-term to the Flyers and play through the remainder of their primes on this next contract, it’s obviously a big deal. It’s such a big deal that both players decided to elect for salary arbitration. We combed through exactly already, but in the most simplest way: It was a way for them to be ineligible for offer sheets, and some other stuff. Other stuff that included things like setting a deadline and guaranteeing them to have a new contract over a month before training camp — which is significant since they both had to miss training camp in Anaheim when they were going through hellish contract negotiations with the Ducks before they were eligible for arbitration. The date for those arbitration hearings have now been set. In an exclusive report from PuckPedia, and the Flyers don’t have a lot of time to figure out a contract before it can get ugly. The arbitration date for Jamie Drysdale is next Monday, July 20, and the date for the arbitration hearing for Trevor Zegras is just two days later on July 22. While the hearings could go as late as August 1 for these hearings, it just so happens that the two Flyers players are going on the very first two dates available. Those two dates are the absolute last opportunity to get a deal done before it gets nasty. Because, after all, no player or team really wants to go to an arbitration hearing — a player fighting for how much money he should make and then the team basically telling them how much they suck and how they’re worth fewer millions of dollars per year than that, isn’t all that fun. Contracts can get signed before that though — notably, zero of the 11 players that filed for arbitration last year actually had a hearing. So now the Flyers are on the clock to try and get a deal done. What sort of contracts do we expect for Zegras and Drysdale? As mentioned, both players should get a whole lot more money. Zegras was on a contract with a $5.75-million AAV, and Drysdale had a $2.3-million AAV. Both of those were just easy bridge contracts that they signed in Anaheim to get something done so that they could actually play some hockey games. For the future, it’s much more complicated because they could go short and try to get unrestricted free agency, or they could stay committed to the Flyers and work out a long-term deal. According to Evolving-Hockey, Zegras is projected to get a four-year contract with a $7.58-million AAV and Drysdale is projected for a five-year deal with a $6.15-million AAV. Those are contract projections before the recent ballooning of deals around the NHL. While Leo Carlsson’s $18-million AAV is inflated because of getting him to sign an offer sheet, contracts like Pavel Mintyukov’s and other peers around these Flyers’ ages, certainly means that they should come in higher if they go that long. Both players are set to hit unrestricted free agency in 2028 at very young ages for open-market players. Therefore, if the Flyers want to go long-term with either of them it is going to involve buying up a whole lot of years of free agency and that gets plenty expensive. There’s no telling exactly what their next contract is going to look like, but it feels reasonable if their combined cap hits come in around $15 million, if they both sign for four years or more. Should we be concerned if they go to arbitration? This is the big question. Should we think that there is now some sort of fractured relationship that this contract negotiation once felt incredibly easy and now it might be heading for arbitration? It’s tough to say. Because the elephant in the room is obviously the Leo Carlsson offer sheet. Could they both just watched the Flyers be willing to give $18 million a year to one single 21-year-old center (and former teammate to both) and after that failed, now do they want part of that action? Since they were going to sign a new contract even if Carlsson was heading to Philadelphia — now that he is not, could we envision them wanting to raise their own contract demands? It’s not impossible. It’s not like we have any information whatsoever about what either player wants out of their next contracts, but it would make sense for them to want more than was projected just because of the new landscape we’re now in. Or, they could see Tyson Foerster signing an eight-year contract at a very reasonable $7.1-million AAV and know th...

[Broad Street Hockey] - Cole Knuble is building a reliable pro game

This season was a long one for Flyers prospect Cole Knuble. It saw him bring his three-year college career to a close — in a season which was challenging at times, as he had to work through some cold spells in production and saw himself moved over to play the wing for stretches to wake his game back up — and jump right into meaningful action with the Phantoms after signing his entry level deal in the spring, joining them for seven games in the heat of their stretch run attempt to get into the playoffs. It wasn’t an easy transition, but Knuble acquitted himself well to the situation, bringing some positive flash and pulling some important lessons for himself, that he could carry into this critical summer of preparation. “I think like the style of pro hockey, you know, it’s like guys are smarter,” Knuble reflected at this month’s Development Camp. “I think that it was really good for me to get that experience, take some stuff away. [Those] guys are grown men, so it’s kind of every level, I guess, you go up, you’re playing against older, stronger guys, so it’s like a similar jump in that respect, but it was just good to gain some confidence, too.” That confidence grew for him as he got more games under his belt, to be sure, but it was also pretty clearly evident in him from the moment he made his debut with the Phantoms. There were times when he lost a battle based on positioning, or got outmuscled, as might have been expected, but there was no fear in his game to engage with an older or stranger battle, to get that first touch in, and look to make a play. It may not have been perfect for him, but that energy and willingness to step up for any and all battles made a very strong first impression for himself. “You can see his responsibility,” Phantoms head coach John Snowden immediately observed after that debut. “He wins his battles. He plays under guys and gets through guys, uses that leverage in battles. You can see he’s not afraid to go touch a puck first, take a hit to make a play. I thought his showcased his ability to make plays and just his brain and how he processes the game and, you know, you get thrown right into the fire and he does [well]. I thought he was excellent tonight.” And Knuble just seemed to get better as his stint went on. Even with a shift back over to play down the middle, Knuble took the extra responsibility in stride. He chipped in a nice bit of offense — a goal and two assists over those seven games — which was an immediate positive, but even more valuable was the energy that he brought and the space that he was able to create through the strength of his checking game. And while that might not have always been the flashiest bit of effort, it did gesture towards something deeply fundamental about the game that he’s been building across the whole of his playing career. “I think just growing up kind of realized,” Knuble went on, “like that’s the way I’m going to be able to make it, like [as] a guy that’s going to go [into] every battle. And I think growing up the emphasis was like not goals or assists, it was always like did you win your 50/50s, and I guess like, did you stick your nose in there. That’s kind of the way my I was coached growing up. Um so yeah, I think that was just how I’ve always played… He used to say like if you have 12 eggs in your pockets, they should all be broken.” Knuble’s impact in a small sample — and the learning that came with it along the way — should have done well to earn him a bit of good standing with the coaching staff to keep in the back pocket, heading into his first full season with the Phantoms, but this player profile that he’s already working to develop could well also leave him primed to step into a meaningful role right from the jump this season. After all, it seems no coincidence that last season the team lost some effectiveness at the midseason point, when Denver Barkey went up to the Flyers and they lost one of their most effective forecheckers, who took up a huge load of minutes, and Knuble’s similar style of play could help them replicate much of what they got from Barkey, which helped to make that top line look downright lethal at times. There’s still much work to be done to get him all the way acclimated to the professional game, and to earn himself a top of the lineup role, but there’s a lot to like in the work that Knuble’s put in already, to get his game to the place it’s at now, and in turn, a lot of reason for optimism that he can continue that steady upward trajectory all the way into an effective professional role in this upcoming rookie season.
