[NBC Sports Philadelphia] - Is Hermansson too ‘offense or bust' for Flyers at No. 21 in draft?

For the first time in a while, . That, of course, makes life a little different for the club’s amateur scouting staff leading up to the 2026 NHL draft. Barring a trade, the Flyers will pick at 21st overall. It’s their lowest first-round spot since 2020. But that was when the Flyers drafted a foundation piece, . So the Flyers know the draft is still critical to what they want to do, even when they’re lower in the order. “, we wanted to build a team that was going to be here for a long time; not just to go for it for a year or two,” general manager Danny Briere said last month. “That’s still the same approach on my end.” After the , the Flyers have only four picks in this draft, which will be held June 26-27. The first round is Friday at 7 p.m. ET, while Rounds 2-7 are Saturday starting at 11 a.m. ET. “I’ll tell you how I feel about drafts and I’ll be totally blunt with you,” TSN director of scouting Craig Button said June 2 in a phone interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I think it’s f—ing bulls–t when I hear about, ‘Oh, this draft isn’t as good.’ Here are the numbers. Approximately 45 players from any draft will play 350 games or more in the NHL. It might be 47 one year, 42 another year. That’s the number — you get 45 players that’ll play 350 games or more with varying degrees of success. “And I know this about the draft. The teams that get good players from the draft say it was a good draft. The teams that don’t get good players from the draft say it wasn’t a good draft. So when people start telling me about a draft ahead of time, I call bulls–t.” Last summer, , with six coming over the first two rounds. Porter Martone was . Now the Flyers will try to hit on a pick in the 20s. “What you’re trying to do is find a player that you feel has the potential to be an NHL player,” Button said. “That might be a third-line center, that might be a second-line scoring winger. Hey, listen, maybe you get David Pastrnak, who’s a superstar (drafted 25th overall in 2014). “But the focus has to be on, ‘OK, what type of player do we like, what type of player do we think the guy can be?’ And then get after it and understand what the development path is, and then try to help that player be the best he can be. Put a stake in the ground and celebrate who you’re drafting.” Before the draft arrives, we’re breaking down first-round targets for the Flyers. Next up: Elton Hermansson Position: Winger Height: 6-foot Weight: 182 Shoots: Right Team: MoDo Scouting report Hermansson is a player that fuels on point production, scoring with plenty of finesse and confidence. The 18-year-old put up 11 goals and 10 assists over 38 games this season in HockeyAllsvenskan, a Swedish pro league that’s a tier below the SHL. He had a very productive 2026 IIHF U-18 World Junior Championship, a tournament that ended last month. Hermansson recorded 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in seven games for Team Sweden, which won gold. But his work ethic and battle level without the puck are suspect. “He had that U-18 tournament, which was impressive,” said June 9 in a phone interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Extremely offensive, great creator. But it’s kind of offense or bust for him and I think that’s part of the issue.” Hermansson is the 20th-ranked player on . “I think he has got to work on his B game, making sure he’s more effective and you can throw him in for a checking role,” Ellis said. “He doesn’t hit many guys, that’s kind of the thing. I think if he adds a little bit more speed, he’d be really interesting. “But I think from a pure skill perspective, few guys can go out there and dangle like he can, few guys can go out there and create the offensive opportunities like he can. It’s just can he do a bit more than that? I think that’s where there’s a question mark for me.” has Hermansson pegged as the fifth-best international skater. He’s the 25th overall player on , but he’s down at No. 55 on . Fit with Flyers While immensely skilled, Hermansson is not the biggest and there are some concerns with his competitiveness. Can he be a true play-driver or does he rely a little too much on others? Will he consistently play 200 feet? The Flyers will have to answer those questions if they see Hermansson as an option at No. 21. The scoring talent is absolutely there and that could intrigue the Flyers. But a different player may give them more answers. More targets • • • • • • • • • • • • •

[Broad Street Hockey] - BSH 2026 Community Draft Board, No. 30: William Hakansson is a projectable defender

As we enter draft week, we’re officially into the last couple picks of the first round on our board. At No. 30 on our list is William Håkansson, a bruising 6-foot-4.5 defenseman that played minutes in the Swedish Hockey League this past season. A lot like yesterday’s profile, , Håkansson plays a simple and effective game on the blueline. There is not much offense to come by with either of the players, but there is so much to like in the other areas of their games that you can reasonably project both to be steady, No. 4-6 type players. Håkansson is just incredibly dependable, and you really know what you are getting out of Håkansson when he steps on the ice. There’s potentially more room for offensive upside than with Piiparinen too, so let’s get into what makes Håkansson an intriguing option in the late first round or early second round. Pre-draft rankings Ranked #58 by Elite Prospects Ranked #24 by Sportsnet (Jason Bukala) Ranked #31 by The Athletic (Scott Wheeler) Ranked #44 by TSN (Craig Button) Statistics What’s there to like? This past season, Håkansson had essentially an even-split of time between the SHL with Luleå HF and the lower tier HockeyAllsvenskan with Almtuna IS. In both leagues, Håkansson’s game remained largely steady and consistent. He did not produce much of any offense (6 points in 38 cumulative games), but Håkansson was never relied upon to be an offensive defenseman for his teams. The good news for Håkansson’s offensive upside? There’s lots of tools already in his game that a modern NHL defenseman needs to score some points. Håkansson is never going to score a ton of points in the NHL, but there’s enough in his toolkit to score 20-30 points in a season. He’s a plus skater, excels on the breakout, does just enough to get his shot through traffic with regularity, and can execute the point-to-point passes extremely well. Håkansson is not going to ever be a defenseman that can regularly make individual moves past guys in the offensive zone, or consistently beat goalies with his shot, but he should be able to gather some points by virtue of his puck-moving, smooth-skating, relatively mistake-free game. If you’re really high on Håkansson, you might be able to dream of him making stretch passes like the one below with more regularity. Or, that Håkansson will regularly use his skating ability to join the rush at opportune times and facilitate just a bit more offense (No. 23 in the next clip). He’s not doing these things very often right now, but the flashes make you believe that there could be something more with Håkansson. Håkansson derives much of his value from his excellent work in the defensive zone and in defending the rush. Regularly, Håkansson is where the incoming offensive play comes to die. He’s so good at maintaining controlled gaps on players rushing into the offensive zone, disrupting plays with his stick and cutting off passes, and overall just using his positioning to kill plays. A lot like Piiparinen in this regard, he defends in the way that good modern NHL defenders excel at. Positioning is the name of the game, and Håkansson rarely gets caught out of position and flat footed in the defensive zone. And if he does get caught out a bit? Håkansson uses his plus skating ability to track guys down more often than not, which really helps in the occasional times he loses control of the play in front of him a bit. What’s not to like? Håkansson excels with positioning, but there are certainly times where he can be a bit caught with aggressive reads. He recovers a lot of the time, but as the competition gets better as Håkansson develops, he’s going to run into trouble with those mistakes. also noted Håkansson’s tendency to rim the puck around the boards a bit carelessly in the second half of this past season, which is definitely something that Håkansson is going to need to improve at. That can’t be his default move under pressure all the time, especially at the rate he was doing it towards the end of the season with Almtuna. In addition, Håkansson could also use a bit more physicality in his game. For a nearly 6-foot-5 defender, he’s not the most physical of players. If he can add some snarl to his already solid defensive game, you can easily see Håkansson being such a pain to play against. We talked a lot in Piiparinen’s profile about his dearth of offensive skills and output, and it’s a pretty similar situation with Håkansson. There’s more in Håkansson’s toolkit than in Piiparinen’s, but you’re still talking about a defenseman with not much offensive upside. If you’re looking for a defenseman that might give you a bit more on the offensive side of the puck, players like Håkansson are probably not going to be your choice in this draft. How would he fit in the Flyers’ system? Behind Oliver Bonk and David Jiricek, Håkansson would immediately be one of the Flyers best defensive prospects. Considering the style of game that he plays, he might be the most easy to project to the NHL lev...

[Broad Street Hockey] - 2025-26 Player Grades: Cam York settled into his role

For the Flyers’ defenders in particular, this was a pretty notably up and down season. There were some big struggles that they faced along the way, but the late-season adjustments to their structure paid dividends in a big way, bringing the level of impact up to such a degree that the team was able to hit a new level, and indeed, crystalize their ultimate push into the postseason. It was an effective team effort, but playing a particularly significant role in all of this was Cam York, as he continued to grow his game in his third full season in the NHL. With some major flash brought along the way, this season was another one of, simply, Cam York doing what he does. Games played Goals Assists Points PIM Shots On Goal Shooting Percentage Average TOI 74 4 22 26 28 89 4.5 22:32 Dipping first into the counting stats, we have the picture painted of a good but not stellar season for York. Despite a couple of minor injury situations throughout the regular season, he remained largely quite durable, and it was a good thing, because he was used pretty significantly on a game over game basis. And the production in all of that was respectable, if a little modest — his 26 points was four off of his career high (when he played a full season two years ago), and he was able to contribute a nice bit of that (eight points) on the power play. All the same, though, we can’t help but feel that there was a bit of offense left on the table for him, as his shooting habit remained quite low, averaging just a hair over one shot on goal per game across the season. (5v5) Goals For % Expected Goals For % Corsi For % High Danger Attempts For % PDO 51.46 48.88 46.37 51.67 1.007 Some of that bears out, as well, in the underlying numbers. While the Flyers were able to do well to suppress scoring while York was on the ice — coming in just a tick over breakeven in the scoring differential — but the share of shot attempts and Expected Goals went the other way on them. And even on a team that did not drive play overly well this season, those averages while York was on the ice were around a percentage point or two below the team average — not leaving them in horrendous shape during his minutes by any stretch of the imagination, and certainly not terrible when we take the difficult of the matchups he faced into account, but still, there were more opportunities given to the opponents to work with than we might have liked, and even if the Flyers were able to prevent those chances from going in the net at a high rate, there’s some room to grow in terms of getting more positive possession in York’s minutes, going forward. (5v5) Points Per 60 Primary Points Per 60 Shots On Goal Per 60 Shot Attempts Per 60 Expected Goals Per 60 .76 .42 2.51 6.5 0.2 There’s some room for improvement here if they’re able to kill a few more plays, to be sure, but equally some headway in those differentials can be made, some more possession established, if York is able to drive a bit more in the way of individual offense. As it stands, his impacts are more or less middling, but the sense is that for a player who is as effective of a puck mover as he is, and who has a shot that has the power to get through traffic from distance as well as the deception to beat goaltenders handily enough when the moment opens up for it, there is more scoring that he can contribute if he just taps into that toolkit more consistently. Developing a well-rounded game is a long process, and we’ve seen him clean up a nice bit on the defensive side, but now we wonder how long it will be before the focus shifts to see how much more he can do as a distributor, without coming at the expense of the rest of his game. Did York live up to expectations? Over these last few seasons, York has been settling nicely into his role at the top of the Flyers’ defense, and this past season saw him continue to largely find success in that big-minutes role. His defensive game has continued to develop well, and even though he doesn’t bring that more traditional booming physical presence, his mobility, his ability to kill plays on the rush, and his work with his stick have made him something of an underrated sound defender. He’s not a player who brings a completely mistake-free game — and there have been some big ones along the way — and there’s some room to improve in those underlying numbers, but the broadest of strokes is that the Flyers have tended to be better off when York is on the ice, and he delivered more of that work over this last season, meeting at least the barest threshold of expectation. Running alongside this, though, is the fact that there has been a hope — if not an expectation — that York’s offense would begin to pop for him at some point, and that just hasn’t really panned out. Some of this comes down to usage — the Flyers are clearly resistant to giving him full charge of the job of running the top power play unit, though there might well be some untapped potential for him there — but some of it...
