[Broad Street Hockey] - Oilers reportedly interested in Flyers’ Owen Tippett in latest trade rumor

The Philadelphia Flyers could be as busy as they want to be this summer. While nothing is desperately needed outside of getting some key restricted free agents in Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale signed to new contracts, general manager Danny Briere has some options before him and there could be a whole lot of action (or none at all). One move that the Flyers might be slightly pushed to do is trade a winger. And if we are reading the tea leaves of recent trade rumors, it certainly seems like there is a whole lot of interest specifically in one winger: Owen Tippett. Tippett has received interest from other teams, such as and a team like that might start calling Briere again this summer. But there is one team of note that is reportedly getting involved in the Tippett trade talks and that is the Edmonton Oilers. Is Owen Tippett the long-term solution for Connor McDavid’s wing? In an article from earlier this week, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta wrote about how the Oilers are going to be hot in pursuit of a top-six winger that they can pair next to Connor McDavid and to add some supplementary scoring. That has been a topic conversation ever since McDavid stepped foot in Edmonton: Just who is going to play with this guy? Who can be his Chris Kunitz to Sidney Crosby? His Jari Kurri to Wayne Gretzky? There have been brief stints with some wingers like Zach Hyman that has worked out well, but it always feels like McDavid is dragging them to his level instead of it being more of a two-way street. Now, could Owen Tippett be that guy? According to Pagnotta, there is some trade chatter that the Oilers are heavily targeting the 27-year-old Flyers winger. “Jeff Marek recently suggested Blues winger Jordan Kyrou may be a target for the Oilers, while some whispers also suggest Philadelphia Flyers winger Owen Tippett, who was fiercely banged up during the playoffs, is also on Edmonton’s radar,” Tippett is coming off of a very good season for the Flyers. He tied his career-high with 28 goals and earned 51 points in 81 games while averaging 16:51 time-on-ice. But beyond the statistics, Tippett looked so much more engaged physically and defensively. He never really disappeared for long stretches like he has throughout his seasons in Philadelphia. Instead, if he wasn’t scoring he was sacrificing his body by running into dudes along the boards and just being an actual impact player off the puck as much as on it. Add the fact that he’s signed until 2032 at just a $6.2-million AAV and there’s a whole lot to like about what Tippett brings to the table. That’s a useful player and obviously the Oilers noticed. Unfortunately for them, they actually need to give some stuff up to get Tippett on their roster. Do the Oilers even have enough to acquire Tippett? The confusing thing with all of this talk about Owen Tippett and Jordan Kyrou as solutions in Edmonton, is that the Oilers are basically bankrupt in terms of assets that they are willing to part ways with. The Oilers do not have their next two first-round picks, their prospect pool has zero people of actual interest, and on their NHL roster it’s a bunch of players they actually need to keep if they want to be good and a bunch of bums. Edmonton can’t even be parting ways with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — namely because he has a no movement clause but he is a massive piece of their scoring depth. Specifically for the Flyers, there might be nothing of interest on the Oilers roster. Are the Flyers really trading Owen Tippett for a banged-up Mattias Ekholm? Of course not. Jake Walman is signed to a wild contract extension, and the Oilers are certainly not moving Evan Bouchard any time soon, obviously. So that’s no defensemen of note. And at forward, the interesting young guys are two underperforming wingers in Ike Howard and Matthew Savoie and then a bunch of veterans to go along with their stars. It might be the worst collection of assets to try and get something from the Flyers. Maybe some other team can fall in love with Howard and view him as a top-six winger eventually, but the Flyers don’t need that. The pairing of the player and the two teams feels impossible to figure out and probably for good reason. This is just isn’t going to happen, no matter how interested the Oilers are in Tippett. The Flyers aren’t going to want any future draft picks just for him to light it up next to McDavid for rest of the decade and make them look foolish to move him just because they had too many wingers at one point. So for now, we can say that Tippett is likely not heading to Edmonton. Somewhere else though? If the other team can send a young center or top-four defensemen to Philadelphia? That feels like an actual possibility.

[Broad Street Hockey] - Flyers eyeing free agent John Carlson as contract demands emerge

The Philadelphia Flyers should have one name atop their wish list in free agency, and that name is John Carlson. Carlson as a target for the Flyers. He has plenty of experience quarterbacking a power play, played for Todd Rierden in Washington, and could help bridge the gap until one of Jamie Drysdale, Oliver Bonk, or David Jiricek is hopefully ready to take over on the man advantage. The one thing that could make some people pause is the price tag for the veteran defenseman. Given that there aren’t a ton of great free agents this summer — or any summer nowadays –, Carlson knows that he’ll have a few suitors vying for his labor. And we now have an idea of what his contract demands may be. Flyers reportedly have interest in John Carlson It should come as no surprise that the Flyers do actually have interest in Carlson. If the average blogger can think of it, surely an NHL front office can as well. Daily Faceoff that the Flyers would be “very interested” in bringing in Carlson on a short-term deal, and that the team is prepared to offer an AAV in the $8 million range. Furthermore, Anthony Di Marco also wrote that the Flyers would be willing to sign Carlson without trading Rasmus Ristolainen, although they are still open to doing so if their asking price is met. That means that the Flyers would be comfortable going into next season with Rasmus Ristolainen, Jamie Drysdale, and John Carlson on the right side with David Jiricek as the seventh defenseman, keeping Oliver Bonk in the AHL to start the season. It may not be what most people would consider ideal, but you can never have too many defensemen, especially right-handed rearguards. What will John Carlson demand in free agency? The Athletics’ Pierre LeBrun that Carlson had been in talks to sign an extension with the Washington Capitals prior to being moved at the trade deadline. According to LeBrun, the conversations were around a two-year extension worth $9 million per season. The insider doubts that Carlson would sign for less than that, whether it’s back in Anaheim or on the open market. Furthermore, LeBrun’s sense is that “there are four or five teams in the East hoping Carlson hits the July 1 market.” When we initially wrote that the Flyers should target Carlson this summer, we looked at the contract projections from both and . Both of them projected a three-year deal for Carlson, with a cap hit of between $7 and $9 million. Given the fact that Carlson may only want a two-year deal, not three, it makes that much more sense for the Flyers to try to land the defenseman. And the Flyers are in a good position to do so with their cap room. According to CapWages, the Flyers currently have just over $39 million in cap space for the 2026-27 season. If they sign their pending restricted free agents to AFP Analytics’ projections, that leaves the Flyers still with over $16 million in cap space. Giving $8 or $9 million to Carlson for two years, especially with Ristolainen’s $5.1M coming off the books next summer at the latest, won’t sandbag a team with plenty of younger players on less expensive contracts. It still takes two to tango, and Carlson could be presented with a better offer elsewhere, but the Flyers should at the very least be one of the teams in on the veteran defenseman at this price.

[Broad Street Hockey] - Mat Barzal could be the answer to the Flyers’ center problem

It’s almost cliche to point out the fact that the Philadelphia Flyers need a first-line center. It’s so obvious that the notion is seeping into other fan bases until one day all 32 will know that this team has a big hole to fill. But there might just be a solution coming this summer and it could come from the New York Islanders. Almost immediately after he entered the league last decade, Mat Barzal was seen as someone who could bring the Islanders to relevancy and was someone just waiting to eventually break out and be on the of the top players in the NHL. Maybe not on the level of the very tippy top, but as one of the top 20 forwards or so? Almost certainly. Since then, he’s somewhat faded into obscurity. He has now never hit a point per game in a season, and tumbled slightly down the Islanders depth chart as he’s barely playing over 20 minutes a night. Suddenly, he now 29 years old and haven’t really hit that proposed peak. As the Islanders look to turn the corner now with franchise face Matthew Schaefer on the back end and other prospects coming up, they may be making a big blockbuster move involving Barzal and somewhat soon. Barzal could be available this summer — the Flyers need to pounce In The Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch drops a bit of a bombshell that the skilled center could be available this summer. “A league executive told The Citizen that the New York Islanders are exploring the market for forward Mathew Barzal. The club would like to clear some cap space, but it’s a big financial commitment with four years left at $9.15 million through 2030-31,” Garrioch writes. “Reports indicate the Utah Mammoth kicked tires on Barzal last summer, but opted not to make the move. Barzal, 29, finished with 19 goals and 72 points in 81 games with the Isles last season, but that salary would be tough for the Senators to swallow.” This does not mean that Barzal is for sure leaving Long Island. Just that the Islanders are dipping their toes into the trade waters to see what the desire for their 29-year-old center truly is. Because, as Garrioch points out, there could be a smaller market for him than expected. With Barzal signed until the 2030-31 season at a cap hit of $9.15 million, he’s not going to be available for every single team out there. Just the fact that he’s not a sure fire top-line center signed until he is 34 years old could make some teams walk away, but add that he’s making close enough to eight digits a year and that might just take even more teams out of the running. Barzal is not a bad player at all. He just finished a 72-point campaign where he earned the most assists he’s had since his Calder-winning rookie year all the way back in 2018. Add the fact that he’s only ever had one season where he finished below 50 percent in 5-on-5 shot attempt share and is genuinely an excellent skater that excels in transition — there’s so much to like about his game. And that just seems like a perfect match for the Flyers. Like, just look at this. You don’t want someone who can just pull out this level of skating in open ice? I love when Mat Barzal remembers who he is — Nicole Shirman (@nicolefshirman) Here lies a slightly distressed asset because of his large contract and his team’s desire to move on from him, and the Flyers having a hole that they need to fill and will gladly take this player that could just gel in so well for this team. Flyers can fit Barzal under their cap fairly easily As always, finances have to play a part. The Flyers are projected to have around $37.49 million in cap space this summer with the NHL’s salary cap rising to $104 million. That is with some players like Jett Luchanko and Oliver Bonk on their roster — two prospects who could start out the year in the AHL so theoretically you can bump up that number by a couple million if you really wanted to. Notably, the Flyers have a couple restricted free agents to sign. Both Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale could feasibly get long-term contracts with the Flyers, which would obviously chip away at their available cap. According to Evolving-Hockey, if Zegras were to be signed to a seven-year extension, that would come with a cap hit around $8.65 million; and if Drysdale went for five years, that would come in around $6.15 million. Add in Emil Andrae and Nikita Grebenkin each re-signing around a $1.5 million AAV, and we get a clearer picture. With those four restricted free agents coming back (and someone like Luchanko sent down) and add in something like a nameless $3-million backup goaltender, the Flyers would have approximately $13 million in cap space. A total of $13 million in cap space for a full roster of players who just made the playoffs and won a series. They can more than afford to bring in Barzal’s $9.1-million AAV and they would barely feel it. Well, obviously it would limit them to having just a few million bucks of wiggle room — but that number also doesn’t include any current Flyers who have their own contracts and cap hi...
