Philadelphia Phillies | Weak Bats Strike Again: Breaking Down the Dodgers Series Loss & What's Next 🔴⚾ The Phillies rode a wave of momentum out of San Diego — sweeping the Padres behind a historic Cristopher Sánchez performance — only to have the offense go ice cold against the Los Angeles Dodgers. We break it all down in this week's episode. Cristopher Sánchez was arguably the best pitcher in baseball last week, tossing seven scoreless innings to extend his streak to 44 2/3 innings, breaking Grover Cleveland Alexander's 115-year-old Phillies franchise record in the process. The offense scraped by during the Padres sweep, slashing just .194/.265/.387 as a team — surviving almost entirely on the long ball with six home runs from five different players. Then came LA. In the series opener Friday, Justin Wrobleski took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and the Dodgers got home runs from Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Shohei Ohtani, and Will Smith in a 4-2 win — with Zack Wheeler suffering his first loss of the season. The Phillies bounced back Saturday behind Edmundo Sosa's clutch two-run homer capping a three-run eighth inning to steal a 4-3 win and snap the Dodgers' six-game winning streak. But the series finale was ugly — Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out a season-high 10 in a 9-1 Dodgers blowout, with J.T. Realmuto also exiting early with a bruised left wrist (X-rays negative). The bats are a real concern. When pitching can't bail them out, this lineup disappears. We discuss the inconsistency, what it means for the NL East race, and whether this offense can figure it out. This week the Phillies head home to Citizens Bank Park to open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres Tuesday night, with Aaron Nola getting the ball to start the home-stand.

The Phillies struck out 34 times over the three-game set.

Andrew Painter started for the Phillies and was done after 3.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits including a pair of solo homers in the 4th. The 23-year-old righty threw 80 pitches to get through his day.

The lone Phillies run came in the 9th when Bryson Stott hit a solo homer, his 6th of the season. Previous to that at bat, Stott was 0-for-20 on the road trip.

The Philadelphia Phillies get a 3-run rally on Tanner Scott in the 7th inning to get past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3

Jesus Luzardo started for the Phillies and threw 5.1 allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six. Luzardo had some bad luck on his side as the second Dodger run was scored after a misplay by Justin Craford in center and an error by Adolis Garcia who was trying to back up Crawford on the same play.

Roki Sasaki kept the Phillies bats cooled until the 6th inning, when he allowed two base runners with one out. Alex Vesia then entered the game and didn’t allow a run. Sasaki’s book closed at 5.1 innings allowing one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out seven.

In that 6th inning, the Phillies loaded the bases with one out and failed to bring a run home. Don Mattingly opted to have Edmundo Sosa pinch hit for Brandon Marsh as the Dodgers had a lefty on the mound in Vesia and Sosa struck out.

The in the 8th, Justin Crawford started the rally win a leadoff single, then came around to score on a Bryce Harper RBI single. Then Sosa took Scott deep for the game winning two-run homer!

Zack Wheeler’s night was done after six innings allowing five hits and a career high four solo home runs. Wheeler used 90 pitches as he saw his ERA rise from 1.67 to 2.27

Wheeler’s the first Phillies’ pitcher since Jerad Eickhoff in 2016 to give up four homers and still go six innings. Eickhoff did so in a 15-2 loss to the Pirates.

Dodgers starter Justin Wrobleski took a no-hitter into the 6th inning, but Kyle Schwarber smacked a solo homer to center field to break up the no-hit-bid. The home run marked Schwarber’s 22nd on the season, tops in the majors.

The Philadelphia Phillies get a FRANCHISE RECORD SETTING performance from Cristopher Sanchez as they SWEEP the Padres with a 3-0 win!

Sanchez set a new team record for consecutive scoreless innings that now sits at 44.2ip. At the close of the 4th inning, Sancez passed the previous record of 41.1ip straight scoreless innings set by Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1911. The lefty wasn't done there as he also tossed his 5th straight game of going at least seven scoreless innings, another club record.

As for Sanchez’ line in the win; seven-scoreless, six hits, no walks, nine strikeouts and 100 pitches thrown. He has not allowed a run since April 30th.

The Phillies supported Sanchez' day with a two-run 6th inning that started with Justin Crawford breaking out of his 0-for-23 slump with a single to center. Then he scored on a Kyle Schwarber RBI single to right.

Crawford also flashed some leather in the bottom of the 6th, robbing Manny Machado of at least extra bases with a grab catch in center.
