The handshake line might be a lot shorter than he might have expected when he was traded to San Diego on August 3. Four of the nine Giants hitters who faced Ray on Friday were not in the big leagues when he was traded. Two of the three pitchers who took the mound for the Giants were not even in the organization the last time Ray wore orange and black, and the third was in the minors and never played with Ray. A lot has changed, but the two imposing sluggers in the heart of the Giants lineup Friday were players Ray knows well, and they were the ones who got to him. Bryce Eldridge smoked a fastball up the middle in the first inning, giving the Giants an early lead and extending his on-base streak to 19 games. Four innings later, Rafael Devers capped a patient rally by golfing a curveball into the arcade. It wasn’t close to being a strike, but right now that doesn’t matter to Devers, who now has 36 homers and 96 RBI for the season. When he was in San Francisco, Ray probably never spent much time thinking about what an Eldridge-Devers duo might look like for years to come. This is the final year of a contract he originally signed in Seattle, and it was clear from pretty early in the season that he would be traded. But this week, Ray took some time to prepare for the two, and he still found them to be a challenge when he returned to a familiar mound. “They’re two really good hitters and they showed it tonight,” Ray said after the Padres escaped with a 7-5 win. “Having those two guys with a little bit different approaches, too, is challenging as a pitcher. Eldridge can keep his hands in and go the other way, Rafi can hit bad balls for home runs. I think those two in the lineup together are probably one of the toughest two outs in baseball.” That’s what the Giants are counting on for the rest of this decade, and on Friday, the Devers slam — the ninth of the season for the lineup, tying a franchise record — got them back in a game that seemed lost. It stayed a two-run game until the ninth, when a good rally again gave Devers and Eldridge a chance. Nate Furman drew a walk from all-world closer Mason Miller and then Jonah Cox somehow surprised the Padres infield by putting a bunt down in an 0-1 count. That allowed Devers to stroll to the plate as the potential winning run with two outs, but Miller pitched to him carefully and issued another walk. With a chance for a second walk-off grand slam this season, Eldridge went down looking on one of the nastiest pitches of the season: A perfectly placed 102.8 mph fastball. Miller’s escape job clinched Ray’s 100th big-league win, a mark that includes 24 with the Giants. “It’s a big accomplishment. Wins are tough to come by,” Ray said. “To be able to get 100 wins, for me, that’s a big milestone. To be able to do it back here in San Francisco, obviously it means a lot more, too.” The Devers slam ruined what otherwise was a strong return to Oracle Park and raised his ERA with the Padres to 5.35. Ray has given up five runs in back-to-back starts, but he said he felt he was throwing the ball well on Friday. The Padres will continue to lean on him as they try to sneak into the postseason as a Wild Card team. “I’m excited going down the stretch,” Ray said. “This is a great team. The bullpen is unbelievable — they picked me up today, which was huge. The bats came out early, which was great to see, too. Overall this is just a really solid team and I think we’re getting hot right at the perfect time.” There’s only one Miller, so the Giants might never be able to replicate the bullpen on the other side, no matter how aggressive they are this offseason. But in Eldridge and Devers, they at least have the makings of a lineup that will more effectively support pitchers next season. In his return to San Francisco, Ray learned that the hard way. But on Friday, the hole was too deep, as the Giants fell 7-5 to the Padres at Oracle Park. The Giants scored early against old friend Robbie Ray, but the Padres responded with seven runs in the next two innings against starter Anthony Molina, seemingly taking control of the game. San Francisco got things going again in the fifth, as a double and two walks loaded the bases for Rafael Devers — who just so happens to be the hottest hitter on the planet right now. Wednesday’s day off doesn’t appear to have halted that momentum, as Devers golfed a breaking ball — a pretty good pitch from Ray — into the right-field arcade to put the Giants right back in the game. In his return to Oracle Park, Ray finished with a line of five earned runs on four hits and four walks in five innings, while striking out five. In seven starts with the Padres since the trade deadline, the 34-year-old has a 5.35 ERA in 33.2 innings with 25 strikeouts to 24 walks. By comparison, Ray had 107 strikeouts to 57 walks for the Giants before being dealt. Rafi remains red hot Devers’ fifth-inning grand slam was both the ninth of his career and San Francisco’s ninth of the 2026 MLB season. On the Giants’ side, it’s the most of any team in the majors this season and tied for the most in a season in franchise history with the 2015 team, which also finished with nine slams. There are 14 more games left in the year to get that elusive 10th. For the player, Devers now is up to 36 homers and 96 RBI in what has turned out to be a fairly strong season for the 29-year-old. He also has 18 round-trippers at Oracle Park this year, which is the most in a single campaign by anyone not named Barry Bonds at the Giants’ current ballpark.
