The Texas Rangers played only six of their first 22 games of the 2026 MLB season at home, so they were happy to be back at Globe Life Field on Thursday to kick off a nine-game homestand. They did so with a 5-1 victory over the Pirates. But it wasn’t that easy. The Rangers needed a leaping catch by Evan Carter to rob O’Neill Cruz of a three-run homer in the fifth inning. The offense then scored three runs to extend their lead from 2-1. Kumar Rocker was the beneficiary of the Carter catch, but the right-hander also pitched well. He allowed only one run in six innings and walked only one while working efficiently for the first time this season. Josh Smith also had a hand in the win as he tries to shake out of his early-season funk. One issue arose: Wyatt Langford left the game with forearm tightness and will have an MRI exam.

The Texas Rangers are 11-11 after three-plus weeks of the 2026 MLB season, which says they’ve been good but not great. They are coming off of a 4-6 homestand in which their starting pitching could have been better. The rotation is the strength of the team, but the group headed by Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom has been short on innings and too high on walks. The offense has improved from last season, but it’s still just an average unit across baseball. The Rangers needed to see improvements from Jake Burger, Josh Jung and Joc Pederson. Has that trio answered the call?
