There was some great competition and the offense starting to get some back against the defense during a cloudy day of work during Day 10 of spring football on the east field next to Husky Stadium.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together after practice to break down the things they saw, the players they saw return after not doing as much during the first big scrimmage of spring, held this past Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium, and also broke down arguably one of the great drills we've watched all spring. And it had nothing to do with offense or defense.

We also laid out the rest of the week and how next week is going to go as well, as all of this is eventually going to culminate in UW's 'Dawgs After Dark' on Friday, May 1 at 6:30 pm PT.

DawgmanRadio: Defense shows up big during first major scrimmage of spring

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - got together after Washington's ninth spring practice, their first major scrimmage of spring, to talk about what they saw, who stood out, and what might be causing issues for certain positions.

And it became clear during the two-hour-plus practice that included well over 100 scrimmage reps that the defense is well ahead of the offense. Why is that? Kim and Chris definitely offer up some opinions on that, and there's certainly reasons on both sides of the ball why that's the case.

They also talked about some of their standout performers, as well as who has stepped in and performed in the absence of others that have been held out due to injury.

There is likely to be only one more major scrimmage before Dawgs After Dark on May 1st, and that one will be a week from today, so don't hesitate to go to Husky Stadium if you can!

DawgmanRadio: Day 8 of spring ball was a great prelude to Saturday's scrimmage

We're at that point in spring football - almost literally the half-way point - where players are kind of done with working on the fundamentals and the details of their position. They want to go hit someone.

They're going to get that chance this Saturday at Husky Stadium during UW's first big scrimmage of spring, but before that they had to push through today's practice.

And there was a lot to push through as the team participated in well over an hour's worth of 11-11 football to finish the day. And you could also tell tempers were starting to fray just a bit and a lot of the players can't wait to put the full pads back on and really get after it.

But just how much will the UW coaches allow during Saturday's scrimmage? That's just one question the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - talked about after Thursday's practice.

Of course they broke down all the major talking points that they saw, like the improvements being made by the offense and the big plays that were also made. But they also talked about the defense, the players that continue to show up, and also the players that are being asked to play more and more snaps due to others being limited - like Logan George in place of EDGE Isaiah Ward.

And what else do Kim and Chris expect to see on Saturday? They try and answer that question at the end of today's recap pod.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - had to do a little improvising to put out this particular post-practice podcast, and it fit the theme of the day.

In a move that went off-script, the Washington Huskies decided to practice off-site. In this case they went to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, the home training facility for the Seattle Seahawks.

For the defense, they were suitably impressed and did their best 'Dark Side' imitation against Washington's offense, especially the defensive backs. Emmanuel Karnley and Paul Mencke Jr. were just two of the standout defenders.

The guys first talked about what they saw on the offensive side of the ball, and then after a quick break to pay some bills flipped the script and talked defense. Then Scott gave a quick recruiting update on the last camp that he went to and the one he is going to this weekend.

DawgmanRadio: Making the most out of a showery Day 6 of spring football

It wasn't ideal, but a little rain wasn't going to stop the Washington Huskies from getting their Saturday scrimmage work in. So that's what they did. They moved to the Dempsey Indoor Facility for roughly 150 minutes to get in their individual work, as well as a lot of team scrimmaging - some of it 'live' in terms of being able to take the ballcarrier to the ground.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - offered up their thoughts after observing Saturday's practice, and the theme of Saturday was definitely competition. Hard to say exactly how many scrimmage reps they got, but it was probably double what they were able to get a week earlier when practice was cut short due to a serious injury.

Starting with the quarterbacks and working their way through the offense first, Kim and Chris talked about the backup quarterback spot, how big is Ansu Sanoe's upside, and just how good are these true freshman receivers?

After a quick break the talk turns to the other side of the ball, including talk on the EDGE rotation and also some comments on one of the larger UW recruiting prospects we've seen in some time, 2027 offensive lineman Ben Lowther.

Kim also quickly updates the situation with the basketball recruiting portal and some of the players the Huskies are targeting, including one that was at practice - LeJuan Watts. He's the younger brother of current UW DL DeSean Watts.

DawgmanRadio: Day 5 brings some definite movement as the Huskies work toward another scrimmage

It was a beautiful Thursday at Husky Stadium as the Washington Huskies worked through their fifth day of spring football. Though it was a shells-and-shorts practice, the Huskies got a lot accomplished. And there was a lot to talk about now that UW is through a third of their spring practices.

Some of it was through the new players - the freshmen and transfers - clearly getting more comfortable with their roles and the routines that they've become accustomed to. And some of it was players just beyond the point where they've shaken off the rust and are now getting past the 'welcome back' phase of camp and have created a platform for themselves by which they can push on to the next level in their development.

The Dawgman guys - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - worked through most of the positions to give not just an idea of who stood out on the day but also who has really taken the biggest advantage of their opportunities.

Some of them, like Quaid Carr, have been helped because the players that were expected to be around him aren't there. And others, like a trio of true freshmen in WR Jordan Clay, OL Kodi Greene, and DL Derek Colman-Brusa, have simply impressed by how quickly they've assimilated into the first teams and showed off their considerable talent.

In fact, Kim asked Chris and Scott - if one of those three ended up a freshman All-American as John Mills did last year for Washington, who would it be? Clay, Greene, or Colman-Brusa?

In what appeared to be an attempt to make up for some of the reps lost when Jordan Washington was hurt Saturday, Jedd Fisch took his Washington team back into Husky Stadium in full pads to not just finish what they started but also add a few more turns to the video vault.

And in doing so they allowed a few players to tack on some own personal highlights, starting with sophomore defensive back Elias Johnson. The 6-foot-2 Johnson was all over the place during Tuesday's Day Four workout, knocking down passes, getting in the way of runs and generally causing headaches for his teammates on the offensive side of the ball.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - talked about Elias' day, and also some of the other players that stood out in their mind on a day where the Huskies didn't have a number of other players available from Saturday's scrimmage. In fact, they were limited in numbers at linebacker to the point where they only had three that could take part in the final team periods.

But that didn't stop the Huskies from getting their work done.

The guys talked about some players they liked watching on both sides of the ball, and Kim also offered up some thoughts to the conversations he had post-practice with WR Coach Kevin Cummings, WR Dezmen Roebuck, and WR Rashid Williams.

And they finished out the podcast talking about Washington's newest commit, as they found their quarterback for the 2027 recruiting class in Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge's Blake Roskopf. If the school sounds familiar, it's because Zerek Sidney and Jalanie George are Roskopf's teammates. Sidney is also a UW commit for 2027 as a receiver and George is 247Sports' top-rated EDGE for the 2028 recruiting class and a top UW target.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - were inside Husky Stadium for Day Three of Washington Spring Football, and everything was going along great until an injury unfortunately cut short practice.

Running back Jordan Washington was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons. As of the posting of this story he's conscious and moving all of his extremities.
Based on the history of how UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch likes to run his Saturday practices, they were just getting into a long team scrimmage period that probably would have gone at least 50-60 plays.

But even in the short amount of scrimmaging that we saw in the first day with full pads, we still saw plenty to talk about.

The guys go through each position grouping and give their thoughts on what they saw. For instance, today was the first day quarterback Elijah Brown was given the keys as UW's backup behind Demond Williams. He's been going back and forth in a battle with Kini McMillan for that spot.

They talk about what they saw from Brown, the freshmen that are making moves, the transfers that are already showing up and making plays, and more in this roughly 40-minute practice recap.

The Washington Huskies were 21st in total defense and 15th in scoring defense last season. Could they be even better in 2026?

There sure seems to be a lot of reasons to think so, starting right at the top with defensive coordinator Ryan Walters.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together after day two of UW's spring football campaign, held Thursday afternoon in mixed conditions on the east field next to Husky Stadium, and hashed out all the good, bad, and ugly that they saw during the 150-minute practice. And the intermittent, spitting wind and rain didn't help things for the offense.

The good on that side of the ball came mostly from the receivers and tight ends, led by Rashid Williams, Chris Lawson, and Decker DeGraaf. It was a mixed day for quarterback Demond Williams and a less than stellar day for the centers, as Jake Flores and Parker Cross were deputized during the final team period due to the Hatchett brothers being unavailable at that time.

But most of the talk was about the defense. From the big, stout defensive front to the experienced linebacking crew and a defensive backs room filled with youth and athleticism, there was a lot to talk about.

It all started with a conversation about Walters, who spoke with the media after Thursday's practice. He talked about his level of comfort being at UW and in Seattle, how it has worked out tremendously for his family. And as he said, when you're comfortable, you can maximize your potential.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together after Washington's first practice of spring and gave their off-the-cuff initial impressions of what they saw during the 150-minute practice Tuesday afternoon on the east field next to Husky Stadium.

The first day of spring is always a kind of 'get to know you' practice, especially for the first-year guys and new transfers. It can also be that way for new coaches, like new offensive assistant coach Matt Cavanaugh.

The guys went through basically every position group to give their general thoughts, as well as more specific commentary on those players that physically stood out. One thing that rang true after seeing the team on the hoof: Jedd Fisch is realizing his vision of getting bigger, especially along the lines.

It was hard not to be impressed with the overall group of true freshmen that were on hand to practice, starting with OL Kodi Greene and DL Derek Colman-Brusa. Even some of the receivers, like Jordan Clay, and the defensive backs like Jeron Jones and Elijah Durr, were hard to ignore.

The guys also talked about the format of practice, how it was geared more to get the guys going with their fundamentals and position-specific drills.

DawgmanRadio: Our Pre-Spring Mailbag!

Due to positive feedback, the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - decided to do another audio mailbag, and this one mostly dealt with what we expect to see during spring football.

But it started with bigger picture questions, like donor fatigue in the NIL age, Pat Chun's relationships with Jedd Fisch and Danny Sprinkle, as well as Fisch's long-term prospects as Washington's head coach compared to moving on.

After a quick break, the talk turned more into the players and coaches we are excited to see as Spring Football is set to begin this coming Tuesday. Who are our choices for breakout stars? Which freshmen do we think stand the best chance at making an impact in 2026?

Hopefully more questions will be answered as we work through next week and see the team in person.
