The Hammers are looking to take advantage of Engels’ situation as he has made it known to Celtic that he would like to not remain at the club beyond the summer. Whilst that’s seemingly a positive, the negative is that this notification hasn’t only gone out to West Ham, and both AC Milan and Roma are trying to convince him to join. An exit is guaranteed, but to where is unknown. In the event West Ham did suffer relegation, which unfortunately transpired, the club were prepared by having a list of targets available that they would like to choose from. Some specifically have since been announced publicly, but it can certainly be seen by the trend of targets that the Hammers will be looking to sign free agents, cheap talent outside of England, as well as the ‘top’ players in the Championship. Arne Engels would be a sublime addition to the Championship for West Ham, but it also seems a very complex deal to complete given the calibre of clubs after him… would you rather have a joyride in Italy where you are playing in either the Europa League or Champions League, or be playing in the Championship? Not to mention, West Ham won’t be able to cover the wages of clubs in European football, so it’ll overall be a hard deal to complete. Many more targets are to come, but a technical director remains a priority - West Ham are hoping to have said person in their position by the end of the week.
