  • Can we just take a second to appreciate that the Flyers are going to set a record for Goaltending Instability this season and yet at the same time can rightly feel more optimistic about their long-term goalie situation than they've been able to in decades?

  • There's a timeline in which Stolarz puts it together and makes a career out of this. But! That timeline involves a lot of projection, and as soon as it became clear that Hart was the goalie of the present, the Flyers didn't really need projection in their backup position.

  • As someone who likes the trade, I will say in Stolarz's defense that much of his NHL sample came earlier this year when his then-coach decided it was a good idea to play him nine straight games (after he didn't play hockey for a year) and he predictably struggled in that time.
Goalie A: - 19 total NHL games played - .911 career SV% - Multiple major knee surgeries before age 25 Goalie B: - 284 total NHL games played - .915 career SV% - No major injury history to speak of Which goalie do you want potentially backing up Carter Hart in 2019-20?

  • I do wish Stolarz the best and hope he gets a chance to stick whether in Edmonton or elsewhere. Wrote this between his first and second knee surgeries, but his 25 under 25 post from two summers ago was my favorite one to write that year: https://t.co/XM8M2DifeN

  • I read this as "they're not immediately extending Talbot but could after the season", not "they know they're not going to extend Talbot". Particularly when you consider the other four names in the "competition" are Elliott, Lyon, Neuvirth, and McKenna.
At this point, Chuck Fletcher has no intention of extending Cam Talbot. In theory, Flyers have 6 goalies in a competition for next season. Or should we say Carter Hart and 5.

  • Realistic worst case scenario for this trade is they don't keep Talbot, Stolarz turns into something, and you lament losing him for nothing. When you already have your goalie (and need to make room in the system for other goalie prospects), that's an acceptable level of downside.

  • I'm not sure, either. But Talbot's got a decent enough track record long-term, he's getting out of just a bad environment right now in Edmonton, he's good friends with Hart, and he may be able to be signed for reasonably cheap. I have time for a test run here.
@Kurt_BSH I'm not sure this move solidifies the position for next year.

  • Cam Talbot really did get a third-place vote for the Vezina in 2015, when he was still a backup to Henrik Lundqvist. What a time.
