Atta boy, Connor. If I was traded to Ottawa I'd throw my phone in the lake too
Should definitely help the 2nd PP unit - wins nearly 60% of draws there, heavy shot, can rip a one-timer as a righty, still has the slick hands even if the legs are giving out.
Dorion said after he talked with Dubas at the draft that they were discussing "a deal that may happen in the future." I'd be willing to take back Mike Condon’s final year and look to grab RHD Dylan DeMelo if they can swing it. Zaitsev waiving for OTT is a big IF though.
Obviously the market could open on Zaitsev once the Leafs pay his July 1 $3 mil bonus. Hearing Ottawa (DJ Smith) among those with some interest, although Sens are on Zaitsev’s “no” list. Something to monitor.
He’ll be doing paid appearances & sponsorship deals until he’s 90 if he keeps up the trajectory he’s on in T.O. There’s still some time left before it goes nuclear, but this seems like a decent kid getting terrible advice and representation.
At his size, Marner has had a chip on his shoulder and thrived on proving doubters wrong his whole career, which is super impressive — but he’s made it now. He’s cherished in his hometown market and is getting offers to the tune of $80 million over eight years from the Leafs.
This stuff about being made whole on rookie bonuses and playing on the fourth line for a few weeks in his rookie year, and the perception he’s made sacrifices and has been disrespected relative to Matthews, is childish nonsense.
Rarely do I put 0 blame on the GM in these situations, but I don’t see much Dubas has done wrong here. The way he speaks of MM and values him is genuine. He got rid of the worst offending contract on the team so he’s not asking Marner to fit himself into a bungled cap structure.
Likely an indication of how tight things are cap wise, but Braun at that cost/cap hit would’ve been a nice fit for Leafs. With Zaitsev gone, could've stepped in on a matchup pair w/ Muzzin (similar to Vlasic-Braun): Rielly - Hainsey Muzzin - Braun Rosen - Dermott (when healthy)
